Intermediate BER file - remove?

We have a legacy UA which runs messages to a gateway then to an
intermediate BER file, onto a rather buggy and slow ISODE 7
transporter, then onto our MTA.

Before we replace the old gateway with a newer one to streamline the
messages path, why was there an intermediate BER file and the ISODE 7
transporter there in the first place? It was all set up a while ago I
understand.
