DNS and Hosts File

For some reason my Solaris PC running bind will look at the local hosts
file before it will look at my DNS server. Why?

No. Your resolver library looks at the files in that order.
Check resolv.conf

Take a look at /etc/nsswitch.conf

Probably because in the configuration file that specifies the order in
which various resolvers are to be tried you've specified that order.

Not familiar with Solaris but on other Unicies I've tried the config
file is /etc/host.conf or /etc/nsswitch.conf.
