OK, I'll try to contain myself here.

I have downloaded and unzipped this file
ftp://ftp.isc.org/isc/bind/contrib/ntbind-.2.0/BIND9.2.0.zip
I read the file named readme1st.txt, and followed what few instructions were
there.

I read the documentation provided in HTML format know as the 'BIND 9
Administrator Reference Manual'

So, you might ask, what more do I need ?

There doesn't seem to be any instructions for creating all the necessary
files, or where to put them.

Please tell me I am wrong, please point me to the place in the documentation
where setting up whatever files 'named' requires is discussed.

This is such a fundamental omission, I am sure I must be missing something.

I just want to start up a DNS server and query it to ensure it is running.

Run, don't walk, run to your nearest bookstore and pick up a copy of
"DNS and BIND", fourth edition. It will explain mostly everything you
might want to know about both DNS in general and BIND as a product:
how it works, how to set it up, scaling, ... (I could go on forever
but my time is limited...)

Hi,
I like the linux documentation project's how-to's for almost every
thing.

http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO.html

If you go and get `DNS and Bind` make sure it's the 4th.

Good Luck
