Mechanism of reslover on client site

When I ping a domain (like www.yahoo.com), the packets
I got using ethereal shows 2 kinds of packets:
1.DNS packets : lookup the ip
2.ICMP packets: ping the ip
I got using ethereal shows 2 kinds of packets:
1.DNS packets : lookup the ip
2.ICMP packets: ping the ip
And then when I put command "ping www.yahoo.com" on
dos mode again, I got only ICMP packets from ethereal ,why ?
Can it possible be forced to always lookup DNS before any application?
The resolver in client site had some cache,rigth ? And to my test,
this mapping table will had
TCP : domain --IP
ICMP: domain --IP
...
