ANNOUNCING THE GEEK CODE PROGRAMMING CONTEST
Since I announced The Geek Code v3.0, I have received dozens of requests
from people that want some kind of a Geek Code interpretor for whatever
platform they happen to be using at the time. Well, since I have limited
programming experience, I thought I'd try having a little fun with this.
I am announcing the Geek Code Programming Contest. I want to get the best
and the brightest of the 'net to write the absolutely bestest interpretors
for The Geek Code v3. Prior to this there have been some haphazard
attempts at interpretors, but nothing truly organized. The Prize?
Absolutely nothing, save the fame of being the writer of one of the
programs, mentioned in the code, and having your programs put up on the
official Geek Home Page.
I'd like to see interpretors written for the following platforms:
Unix (perl probably, although C would be good)
DOS
Windows
OS/2
Macintosh
These are the platforms most often requested If you want to be really
geeky, however, go ahead and write one for Amiga, Atari, Apple II, or
Adam.
Winners will be determined on functionality, ease of use, and features
included. Honorable mentions will be given to programs that use unique
approaches to de-geekifying. For example, writing an interpretor for
Apple II is geeky. Writing an interpretor for Apple II in Applesoft
BASIC is even more so.
WHAT A GEEK CODE INTERPRETOR SHOULD DO
I'm fairly open on how the programs should work. However, for ease of use
they should function in a manner that is easy for the average net.citizen
to use. For Unix, typing something like "ungeek filename" should be able
to find the geek code in the filename and spit out English translations
(it must also handle pipes). For windows, OS/2 and Mac, dropping a file
on the icon (or opening a text file in the program) should spit out an
English translator. Basically, any program should be easy to use.
All programs should be distributed using the GPL.
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE CONTEST
Drop me an email letting me know what platform(s) you want to write for
and I'll respond by emailing you the ASCII version of the geek code.
When you are done, drop the program back to me and I'll do some test
runs. When all the applicants have completed their programs, I'll
announce the winners in each category and the winning (and honorable
mentions) programs will be put up on the Geek Home Page.
ANY QUESTIONS?
If you have any questions, please drop me an emailee and I'll be happy to
answer them.
