Hi

I hope this is the right place to ask, if not, please don't flame
too much but tell me where I should ask. Thank you! :-)

I got here an IBM OEM Disk Drive with 1GB cap. SCSI, the only
information is '0662'. I looked it up on the IBM web server but
with no success.

The disk has 11 jumpers (one unused) and another block directly
on the board with 4 jumpers. I think I know how to change the id
but I think I have do disable T.I. Sync.Neg. and enable Auto Startup
and enable Termination and Terminator Power (I think I got this,
there is an extra jumper).

I tried to put the disk into a PC but my PCI NCR 810 (?) wouldn't
recognize it. (It recognizes the tape drive though).

We got the disk out of an old SGI so nobody really has the docs...
Please, any help is appreciated, and please send replies also
to 'p...@cg.tuwien.ac.at' since I'm not too familiar with my slipped
netscape by now! :-)

Thanks in advance,
Peter Stieglecker

It's old enough that it's not on the Web Server.

Unless you are on a Mac, you probably don't need to disable T.I.Sync Neg.

You also should not need to enable Term Power -- the adapter card is SUPPOSED
to provide this. The typical exception is parallel port SCSI cards which steal
Term Power to power themselves.

From my notes, here are the jumper settings. I don't have notes on one with
11 jumpers, but maybe this will help:

========================================================================
Spitfire SCSI (IBM 0662) with 36-pin jumper block.

01 03 05 07 11 13 15 17 19 21 23 25 27 29 31 33 35 A02 A01
02 04 06 08 10 12 14 16 18 20 22 24 26 28 30 32 34 36

01-02 SCSI Address Value 8 (NOTE, these pins will not be present
on narrow SCSI Spitfires)
03-04 SCSI Address Value 4
05-06 SCSI Address Value 2
07-08 SCSI Address Value 1
09 Missing
10 Unused
11-12 Auto Start
13-14 Enable Termination. Note: Some (a very few) Spitfires do not
have on-board termination. I do not know how to recognize these.
15 - Master Sync
16 - Slave Sync
17-18 LED (17 is anode, 18 cathode)
19-20 Not Connected
21-22 Write Protect
23-24 Not connected
25-26 Auto Start Delay
27-28 For OEM Customation
29-30 For OEM Customation
31-32 Disable Unit Attentions
33-34 Disable SCSI Parity
35-36 Disable T.I. Sync Negotiations
A01-A02 Termination Power Enable

There are also 4 jumpers (8 pins) on the electronics card that
are documented in the Spitfire spec, but are not of general
interest.

========================================================================
Spitfire SCSI (IBM 0662) with 24-pin jumper block.

01 03 05 07 11 13 15 17 19 21 23 A02 A01
02 04 06 08 10 12 14 16 18 20 22 24

01-02 SCSI Address Value 8 (NOTE, these pins will not be present
on narrow SCSI Spitfires)
03-04 SCSI Address Value 4
05-06 SCSI Address Value 2
07-08 SCSI Address Value 1
09 Missing
10 Unused
11-12 Auto Start
13-14 Enable Termination. Note: Some (a very few) Spitfires do not
have on-board termination. I do not know how to recognize these.
15 - Master Sync
16 - Slave Sync
17-18 LED (17 is anode, 18 cathode)
19-20 Write Protect
21-22 Auto Start Delay
23-24 For OEM Customation
A01-A02 Termination Power Enable

According to the spec the bottom jumper block (on the PC card
as opposed to on the end) has the following meanings:

07 05 03 01
08 06 04 02

01-02 Customizing (your drive probably doesn't have any customizing)
03-04 Disable Unit Attentions (you don't want to do this)
04-06 Disable SCSI Parity (you don't want to do this)
07-08 Disable T.I. Synch Negotiations (you don't want to do this)

I really don't think you want to put any jumpers on the eight-pin
block.

There's a reasonable chance that it has been formatted with a sector
size other than 512 bytes. You will need to do a low-level format to
change the sector size to 512. (Can anyone out there tell us what
sector sizes SGI has used? The only examples I can find show SGI
using 512.)
