Folks, Please excuse the cross post (this is the first and last time I do
it), I am posting this in the hope that it may help some others that are
having problems with SCSI Scanners and Windows XP.

I have Windows XP Pro and the UMAX Vista S6E, Polaroid Sprintscan 4000, with
the Advansys 3922 SCSI card.

You must make sure you have installed the ASPI driver for the SCSI Card (as
XP does not include ASPI drivers). I used the Adaptec ones kindly posted by
another problem solver at - ftp://ftp.computerroom.com/WinXP/ASPI/aspi.zip .
(Run the ASPI check utility first to confirm that ASPI is not yet installed
correctly, then install the ASPI drivers).

I am using Magicscan 4.3 - http://www.umaxweb.de/ftp/ms_pc/ms43drv.exe ,
which works very well with the Vista S6E, and is much better than Vistascan.
I have not yet tried the latest version of Magicscan (4.4) at -
ftp://ftp.umax.co.uk/pc/umax/scanners/ms440/ms440pcall.zip (big file 27mb),
because if figure if it aint broke don't fix it . I also have the Polaroid
Sprintscan 4000, as ID6 (Vistascan is ID4) on the same card, and this works
well with the latest Polacolor insight Pro Version 5.0 software -
http://www.polaroid.com/service/software/sprintscan/pci_50_i.exe (not for
the SprintScan 35, 35ES, 35LE, 45, and 45i though).

Windows XP was finding the Vista S6E device 8 times but was unable to load
the driver, although after clicking cancel 8 times, the scanner worked
perfectly. (Scanner appeared 8 times in the device manager as an unknown
device), I have now managed to get XP to only find it once (although it
still reports one error), and the software still works fine (appears only
once in the device manager as an unknown device). See Microsoft
Knowledgebase article Q311907 here for the fix to duplicated scanner
devices - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q311907 .

PS. www.umax.co.uk is the best site for drivers for the Umax Scanners.

If this solves anyones problems than my work is done.

Happy Scanning

Stew.

I'm using 2k with Umax 1220S (Adapt 2940UW)
I don't know why, but it only works with the generic 2k-driver. When
installing a Umax-driver my system crashes with a bluescreen. Under NT I
learned to hate the vistascan, because you get 3 controllers installed,
you have to deactivate manually. And then under 2k that problem. I'll
never user manufacturer-drivers for my scanner anymore.

Cheers for the info - I now have my second hand Vista S6E working -
everything seems fine except for the unknown device in device manager.

By the way, Magicscan 4.3 works fine - 4.4/4.5 don't detect the scanner.

Does anyone know where I could download the scanner user manual? All the
umax FTP sites only have the newer scanners listed...

hi folks - my question is this: I have xp pro and a polaroid 4000 on an
adaptec 2906 scsi card. Scanner seems to be working fine without these
aspi drivers when using the polaroid insight software. - what is the
benefit of having these ASPI drivers? Are they needed only for an
application like Vuesscan [twain]? Polaroid tells me that their
'insight' software is not twain driven [it saves the scans then opens
them in pshop, rather than working witin it], so does this explain why
I've gotten by w/o them?

Sorry for the dumb (?) question - there's only so much that I can keep up
with on these fancy komputer terms...

On my system, MagicScan 4.5 works with my 1200S under XP when the
compatibility mode setting is for Windows NT or Windows 95.
Windows 98/ME and Windows 2000 settings do not work.

However, this works only when MagicScan is used freestanding.
When called from within an application (PageManager, Photoshop or Office
2000) the compatibility mode setting does not seem to apply and the launch
fails. (Scanner not recognised.)
VistaScan 3.55, updated for XP, works when called from within an application
but for VistaScan to work either the scanner must be powered up at boot, or
the UDNT service started manually after the scanner has been installed in
Device Manager.

Dominic, did you try replacing the Twain_32 DLL as I suggested
in a previous thread? Just curious to know if it made a difference.

Hi Dominic,

Trying to download the 3.55 vistascan and unable to when using the combo
"xp" and "1200s".

What is a good combo to get the software download?

Tx,

No.
I'm not willing to replace XP files with Windows 2000 versions.
