I started having crashes recently on my Power Macintosh G3 (beige) when
using my SyQuest EZFlyer removable cartridge drive. The SyQuest drive is
daisy-chained to the G3 via SCSI connection; the SyQuest is on the end of
the chain, with an old HP ScanJet II the only device between the computer
and the SyQuest drive.

Here's what's going on:

1: I tried inserting different cartridges. Everything works fine. They mount
okay. I can open folders without any problem. Then I try doing something
like copying a file from a cartridge to the hard disk, or vice versa, and I
get another freeze. The mouse pointer still rolls but the menus don't work
and the clock stops running.

2: The funny part is, the freezes only occur with cartridges I've tried
copying files to/from. On the cartridges that I haven't done this, I'm still
able to load them and view their contents without a crash.

3: I checked the SCSI ID numbers for the various SCSI devices. No conflict
there.

Hi, Wingsley.

You've probably already checked termination but, since you didn't mention it, I have to ask. You know, of course, that the end of the cable must be terminated; that usually means that the last device - and only the last device - on the cable must be terminated. In your case, the SyQuest must be terminated and the ScanJet must not be terminated. Also, check that your total cable length is within SCSI limits.

Have you tried removing the ScanJet II from your SCSI chain,
terminating the EZ-Flyer and seeing how it acts when it's the only SCSI
device on the chain? Don't know about HP but many scanner manufacturers
recommend that a SCSI scanner be the last device on the chain. So far
I've lucked out with both an ORB and a SyJet connected to a SCSI-2 card
without any problems. I "stuck" my UMAX Astra 1200S on my PowerCenter
Pro's internal SCSI bus, just in case. :)

I had very similar problems with my PC. Adaptec 2940 SCSI adapter with Flyer
and ScanJet externally and other devices internally. Everything was SCSI-II
except the ScanJet which was a SCSI-I device. I solved it this way: I put
the
ScanJet last in the chain with the termination on. The Flyer is self
terminating. I normally ran the computer with the Flyer always switched on
and the ScanJet switched off. If I wanted to scan something I booted the
computer with the Flyer switched off and the ScanJet switched on. Then
rebooted with the normal configuration when I finished scanning. Worked
perfectly every time without swapping SCSI leads around (the only
alternative which worked).

I eventually scrapped the ScanJet when the lamp started to age and the
colour balance varied during the scanning process (too much red at the
start). I replaced it with an Epson GT-7000 USB. One of the best purchases I
ever made.

You have write errors. Stop using your drive for writing, set it to write protect and save your data asap. If it destroys the file
allocation table you have no means of getting any data from it
anymore.

UPDATE
-----------------------------------------------

1: my SyQuest drive is supposed to be self-terminating

2: I tried attaching a SCSI terminator to the open port on the SyQuest
drive, just to see what would happen. Same results. Except...

3: This time, I tried loading the cartridge BEFORE opening the SyQuest
Utilities cdev (control panel; I'm using v. 4.01). No freeze. When I opened
the cdev, it showed the SyQuest drive operating and an unknown volume
present. No cartridge icon appeared on the desktop. I could not get the cdev
to mount the cartridge.

Weirder and weirder...

How do you do this using SyQuest utilities on a Mac?

Isn't there a WP tab on the cartridge?
BTW, I don't use a MAC, I only recognized the symptoms of a contaminated RW head.

ANOTHER UPDATE:

I tried breaking the SCSI chain, connecting the EZ Flyer 230 directly to the
G3's SCSI port. Same results.

Do you have a "D2" driver in your system folder. If you have then this may
be causing the problem.
Remove it from the system folder or delete it.
My only other thought is that your cabling is not up to scratch. Have you
tried a different cable?
Pete.

UPDATE:

I reconnected the SyQuest drive directly to the G3, isolating the HP
ScanJet. Nothing changed.

Then I decided to try removing the HP's goodies from my System folder.
(There were 2 folders, one called "DeskScan II", and one called "TWAIN",
tucked away in my Preferences folder.) I rebooted, turning my drive on and
inserting the cartridge while the splash screen was coming up, and
everything works fine now. The logical inference here is that the EZFyler's
mechanism or driver software is not compatible with the ScanJet's system
folder goodies.

Now the burning question becomes: is it possible to daisy-chain the two
devices, with the EZFyler on the end of the chain, and still use the EZFlyer
without employing the ScanJet and/or DeskScan software. Somehow, I don't
expect to like the answer. :-(

OK. There's your problem. There should be no mention of HP in the TWAIN
subfolders of the Windows folder unless you are using the HP interface card.
When you load the DeskScan software look for a couple of checkboxes which
allow you to choose between the HP card and "Another SCSI host" or similar
wording. I use Corel PhotoPaint to capture scanned images and a Corel
subfolder appears under \Windows\Twain_32.

I assume you read my posting of 31 Jan. I put the HP scanner at the end of
the chain and only switched it on and rebooted when I wanted to scan. Having
the Flyer and the HP scanner on together was unreliable.

Ooops. Sorry. You are using a Mac. My post is applicable to a PC running
Win98. My Mistake. Still, might help someone else.
