How do I get warranty service on a failing hp5100Cse? I try their
Colorado number (at my expense): (208) 323-2551, run up a considerable
LD bill getting thru their GD long-winded menu and then (repeatedly)
get dropped while waiting for the next available service
representative. I'm getting pissed!

Good question!
If anyone has this inforamtion, pass it along to me also. I was on that
line today for quite awhile to find out I am supposed to call a 900 number!
My ScanJet 5p is giving me a yellowish line through scans and in diagnostic
mode is failing it's light response test :-(

Call the (916) service center number, press 1 (that you've already
been diagnosed...so lie a little) and then raise holy hell. They're
picking up my scanner tomorrow ;-)

You might be amused to know that I posted a complaint to the "Customer
Care" Forum complaining of the problems in reaching a real person to
return a scanner under warranty. My posting appeared, then
disappeared. I guess the moderator found it "inappropriate" ;-)

In a way, though, hp's behavior is useful. There will be a customer
rebellion, perhaps a class-action suit, perhaps even government
regulation...the poor customer service performance by ALL suppliers of
PC hardware AND software must come to a halt!

I am pissed royally at the gall of HP for the upgrade to Win 98. I was
about to spring for the upgrade until I saw how much the worms wanted for
shipping and handling. I will think long and hard before I buy HP again.
The commitment to the customer should last longer that the point of sale.
I don't want to deny them a profit but what is the price of the 900
service , isn't it around $2.95 per minute. Off the top of my head that's
over $150. per hour. The local Best Buy had a HP rep. over the weekend and
he thought that it was ridiculous to charge for the Win 98 upgrade. He
took my E-mail address but has yet to send a reply. I'm hot.

3 ways for tech support:
1.in warranty: long distance charge to area code 208
2. out of warranty:900 # @ 2.50 per minute; max of $25.00
3. out of wqarranty: $25.00 straight to credit card

I have seen Deskscan 2.8 and 2.9 as well as versions of PrecisionScan
on various newsgroups.
Good Luck! (work for, not speaking for HP Scanjets)

At least all of you have a machine you can call about. It appears that HP
never did and doesn't at the present intend to furnish any support for HP
5s. This was one of the few ADF scanners on the market until recently and
it don't work worth a darn with W98 and no driver upgrade is forth coming.

Gary I use the HP 5s scanner in Windows 98 and have absolutely no problems
what-so-ever.
It works like a charm and the drivers are already updated via the use of
Visioneer Paper Port that comes with the scanner. I purchased the PaperPort
Deluxe 5.0 and that too works flawlessly on my machine. Maybe you have a
conflict in your system?
