Hi,

I think I read this somewhere before, but can't find it anymore.
I run Mandrake 9.0 and Vuescan 7.5.69.

Very often when I run a prescan on my Minolta SDIII, vuescan hangs
during the prescan.

Any hints?

Happened to me when I had the scanner connected to USB 2.0. Things were back
to normal when I got the scanner connected to a USB1.1 slot. No such
problems with Minolta software though. Hopefully Ed will address that in a
comign release

Hi,

I just downloaded and tried the 7.6 version. This seem to work (6
negativs scanned without any problems so far).

(Switching of the autofocus in 7.5.69 did unfortunately not help; thanks
for the comment anyhow Dirk!)

Hi again,

I was a bit too fast. Today vuescan 7.6 hanged again during a prescan.
There is a real problem here...

Check to see if there are any timeout messages in the logs
from the kernel USB driver.

It's probably a bug in the Linux USB driver.

Ed,

I could not find any such messages in the /var/log/kernel/error file:

However, in the /var/log/kernel/warnings file I did find something like
that:

I also noticed that the hanging occurs AFTER the prescan and that the
scanning progress indicator ("scanning xx%") in the bottom right hand
corner of the vuescan window, does not appear, as it does in successfull
scans.

One more important observation: I was scanning when I read your post in
the newsgroup and decided to take a look at the logs. Doing that,
thescanner slowed down, coming to a 'deadly' stop: vuescan does not
respond any more. The phenomenon looks like the hanging during the prescans.

Hope this was of any help.

Ralf

This is one of the problems.

This is another problem.

I'm not sure what else can be done, other than increasing the
timeout in the Linux USB driver.

Ed,

Can't you make a 'work-around' for this in Vuescan? Otherwise it would
mean that my Minolta DSIII and Vuescan can not be used at all.

Ed,

I have also run vuescan 7.6 (on the same machine as before) under VMWARE
running W2K as a guest OS on the Linux host. In W2K,I have THE SAME
problems with Vuescan as in native Linux, allthough I now do not use the
LINUX scanner module or the linux usb driver (this is not occupied by
VMWARE and W2K).

Furthermore, when running the Minolta software under the same OS (VMWARE
and W2K guest OS; linux host OS) there are NO problems, even when I load
the system hard. No appearent timeouts, nor hanging of the scanner.

To me, this means that there is a problem in Vuescan (problems in both
Linux and W2K).
There ver well be some problems with the Linux usb and scanner modules
too, but they do not alone cause the problems with the Minolta Dimage
SDIII and vuescan 7.6

I would really like to get started with scanning my scanner with
vuescan. Does this give you more help to find the problem?

Ralf, Ed,

Just to let you know, I have exactly the same problem with WinXP, SP1 and
Minolta SDIII connected to USB2.0 (Gigabyte MB with built-in USB). Scanning
worked a number of times with previous versions of Vuescan (7.5.67 and
7.5.68, I think), but I experienced frequent hangups about every 20 or 30
scans. The only thing to do was a complete reboot.

In version 7.5.69 and 7.6, it doesn't work at all - vuescan hangs after the
focussing in the prescan part. I can hear the scanner moving, but the data
seems to be stuck on the way. I have already reinstalled the USB2.0 drivers.
Strange thing is, the scanner works without problems with the Minolta
software, so I think I can rule out any USB driver issue. Unfortunately I
don't have a USB1.1 port to connect to.

I haven't tried switching of autofocus, but this is the next thing I will
do. Is there any log file I can enable?

Hi,

I also tested a usb 1.1 port. This seems to work (4 out of 4 subsequent
scans without problems; with usb 2.0 this is about 1 out of 10
successfull scans!). Although the scanner at the highest resolution
(using usb 1.1) slows down often and even stops for some second to write
te data to the computer, but Vuescan 7.6 takes care of this without
problems!

The problem seems definately related to a 'communication problem'
between vuescan and usb 2.0., independent of the OS.

I also had used that on a Gigabyte motherboard, the GA7VAXP to be exact.
Are you sure it doesn't have any 1.1 ports? The ones near the
keyboard/mouse connector are only 1.1, not 2.0. The port plate with the 4
USB 2.0 connectors built in that plugs into the bottom of the motherboard
provide the only USB 2.0 ports.

FYI, I also had the SD3 locking up on me. I went to Gigabyte's website and
downloaded the latest VIA USB 2.0 drivers and the problem went away.
