a) During the first two days of operation it showed a wide
multi-coloured streak in the axis of movement of the negative carrier
(i.e., in the long dimension of the negative). This showed both when
using the original Minolta software and Vuescan 7.6.64 (demo version)
under Windows XP. I also tried to use Vuescan 7.6.64 under Linux, and
the same thing happened. Then this problem stopped showing when
scanning with Vuescan under Windows, but it was there with the
original Minolta software. After searching for this problem, I found
somewhere that it might help using the scanner positioned vertically
instead of horizontally. This made the wide streak dissappear, but
after that I noticed another problem:
b) Instead of the wide multicoloured streak, now I get 1 pixel wide
lines which also go across the scanned image along its largest
dimension. These lines seem to appear at random positions, but they
tend to appear around the same area. They are usually of a yellow or
magenta colour. These lines appear much more prominently when I use
Vuescan 7.6.64 under Linux than under Windows (either the MInolta
software or Vuescan under Windows).
The computer to which the scanner is connected has a USB 1.1 port, I
wonder if it has anything to do with that... although the Minolta Scan Dual
III is supposed to be USB 1.1 compatible...
I also get still another problem, this time only with VueScan under
Linux (not with Vuescan under Windows, even though it's the same
version): I always get a quite huge band with a lighter colour in one
side of the negative along its largest dimension (at the top, when
viewed in landscape orientation). If it helps, I'm using kernel
2.4.22.
I have tried 8 bit per channel, 16 bit per channel, single pass,
multi-pass, but those 1 pixel wide lines are always there. They are
much less visible when scanning with the Minolta software, but if I
tweak the gamma value of the image, they show up immediately.
Sorry for this long post :) If anybody has had any similar
experiences, I would like to know about them and if the problem was
finally solved. I would like to avoid having to send the scanner to
repair / change, so I need to know if those 1 pixel wide lines are
normal or not.

I've had a scan dual 3 for a while now and don't get the problems you
mention although i use it through usb 2, i also increase memory allocation
in vuescan to about 130mb.

Or re-initialize (CTRL+Shift+I in the Minolta software) or re-calibrate
(CTRL+C in VueScan) after some warm-up time.

I think I am experiencing similiar problems with a Minolta 5400. I
returned an SE5400 because all of my scans had straight lines in -
regardless of whether ICE/grain dissolver was enabled - which ran
lengthways (in the scan direction). The lines also appeared when using
Vuescan and were only visible in the blue and green channels. The
lines in the blue channel were in a different position to the lines in
the green channel. No lines were visible in the red channel however.
If I zoomed right up in the image in Photoshop I could just about make
out that the lines were kind of yellow in colour.
I returned the scanner and I am now on my second SE5400 - from a
different supplier (the original supplier was out of stock) - and this
one has exactly the same problem!
I have found that scanning at 5400dpi and downsizing to 2700dpi
reduces the visibility of the lines dramatically, although this is far
from ideal. For me, it is unacceptable.

I've tried all this too, with exactly the same results. No matter what
settings I make (or don't make) these lines are always there.

This is an interesting suggestion. My (second) SE5400 has been
supplied with a European power adaptor (two pin) and a seperate UK
'travel' adaptor (three pin) (you know, the kind that vistors to the
UK would use to plug in their hairdryers etc) which the Minolta power
adaptor plugs in to. I've phoned the supplier and they said they have
no proper UK Minolta power adaptors as this is how the scanners have
been supplied to them. I then phoned Minolta and they have (kindly)
said they will send me the correct power adaptor. That was a week ago
though... I am using a 'surge protector' which I plug into the socket,
with the European adaptor (plugged into the UK converter) plugged into
that. Phew, I'm almost confusing myself! I wonder if either the
European adaptor/UK converter combo or the 'surge protector' could be
the cause?

HOWEVER, if I thouroughly clean all the dust away from the transparency
adapter (light source) and the clear strip on the flat bed used for
preliminary exposure control(?), the bands can be eliminated!
Is the effect that people are seeing due to some dust/dirt in the light path
causing the electronics to compensate over a narrow range of pixels and
hence overexposing a line in the direction of scan?
