My MicroTek ScanMaker E6 won't scan in color. ScanWizard is set for millions
of colors, color correction is checked. Regardless, images lack color in
preview/scan; they're not black and white, more of a washed out bluish tinge
throughout with no color contrast at all. I've run ScanWizard through both
Corel PhotoHouse and ULead PhotoImpact to no avail.

The scanner is hooked to an Adaptec 2902 card with no other devices attached.
My SCSI PC is also using an Adaptec 2940UW for the internal devices. On
bootup, only the 2940UW shows up, but both cards are visible in Control Panel
/ System / Device manager. I installed ScanWizard version 2.44 as MicroTek
tech advised but nothing changed; lately, I haven't had the time off to
contact them during their regular hours.

I'm hoping someone has encountered this problem and resolved it. This is my
first scanner;I apologize if I haven't provided all the relevant info.

I'm sure you've already done this, but is termination set at the
scanner and the 2902?

If It's a new scanner I'd return it and try a replacement. I've
got an E3 hooked to an Adaptec 1502ae (part of the kit) and
it works fine with no termination on the scanner end.

Good luck,

Kevin

Why aren't you using the 2940UW?

You can set the card to 5.0 MB transfer and "NO" to the other parameters
for just the scanner's ID channel. I've both an E-6 and a T35+ living
happily on a 2940UW. Use the pasthrough termination block from Microtek.

Lastly, have you reset the toolbox on ScanWizard?

Thanks to all for responding. Unfortunately for me, no one appears to have had the
same experience that I've described, and my scanner still won't preview/scan in
color.

Yes, termination is set for both. It even "works" without scanner termination, but
the color is still missing.

Both internal connectors on the 2940UW are in use. I bought the 2902 because I
intended to connect more external devices, and with respect to the SCSI chain
length. If I can't resolve my problem using the 2902, I will attempt, as a last
resort, to reset the connections on the 2940UW.

This being my first scanner, I'm a newbie at this. Even after reviewing the
MicroTek info on the CD-ROM, I don't have any idea how to do the above.

>Lastly, have you reset the toolbox on ScanWizard?

Yes, I did.

Because I'm new at this, I'm inclined to suffer from self-blame, suspecting that
it may be my lack of knowledge rather than the equipment that's at fault.

Again, thanks for your responses.

My Microtek ScanMaker E6 won't scan in color either. I have an E6 Pro hooked
to an Adaptec 1502AE. It worked for awhile, about 8 color scans, then just
stopped working for color. It scans black and white just fine, but aborts
with a page fault whenever I try to do anything in color. I've tried
scanning the smallest area, lest it be a memory problem - doesn't work. It
always blows up with ScanWizard, though the module where the page fault
occurs sometimes wanders around (HR132, Twain_32, etc.) The scanner test
works fine, but it is not color. I've installed multiple levels of
ScanWizard in Win95 and WinNT. The results are consistent. B&W works fine,
color blows up immediately. I've tried scanning under various products:
Adobe Photoshop, ThumbsPlus, MGI Photosuite, MS Paint, Imiging... always with
the same results.

About the time the color scanning stopped working I installed some Kodak
software that had a Twain driver. But I removed it when the color scanning
was blowing up, and it hasn't made a difference, so I don't think that was
it.

I talked with tech support and they said it was the cable, so they sent a new
cable. It didn't work. Since then I've called the support line, and get a
cryptic message to leave a number and they will return the call. After I
leave the number, it hangs up. I left the first message June 9. No
response, so I left another last week. No response. I called another
support number and it says try again later. It's always been that way when
I've tried. I've sent three e-mails and received no response. The web
support doesn't address this problem. I've tried everything recommended
there, and have installed all the versions of ScanWizard at the ftp site.

I talked with a dealer to see if it has any insight into the lack of support.
The dealer claimed know of no problems, but probing further I learned that
they no longer carry any Microtek scanners at all, though they did carry them
last year.

At this point I've decided that the company is not going to support its
product, and there isn't any way to make it work within my resources. It has
taken three months and about 120 hour to arrive at this point, and I'm really
at the end of the line, because there isn't anything else to try. I'm
throwing the Microtek S canMaker E6 in the trash, and today I bought a UMax
1220S.

Really, the only hope left to make it work is if someone out there on usenet
knows something that the tech support doesn't. It appears to be software,
but I guess it could be hardware. If it is, then it is probably just as
cheap to buy new, because when I did talk to the tech support way back when
they said it was not covered by their warranty. The new UMax only cost $170
and has a better warranty. According to my son, it also has a better track
record.

Why am I posting this query, then. I hope someone KNOWS how to make the E6
work for a reasonable cost/effort. Then I can donate it to someone else,
rather than have it be a total loss. As for me, though, I'm through with
Microtek products. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

That the problem started when you installed the Kodak SW suggest that
there might be conflicts amongst various color management software
components and TWAIN interface components. Photoshop installs some
Kodak color management system software and profiles; some of your other
image editing software also may have made changes in this area. And
uninstalls are notorious for not removing 'shared' system components
such as color mnagement or even TWAIN modules.

When you had the problem did you have "color correction" checked on in
the Scan Wizard scan control panel? (I think it is on by default if DCR
is present.) If so, try turning it off. Also for a start, do a Reset
(Scan Wizard Reset button) in the scan menu and check Auto off.

Is the SCSI interface terminated? That can cause problems (usually
freezing the scan rather than page faults, though).

Another test it to select TWAIN16 for the TWAIN32 source rather than
TWAIN32 (if the color correction off trial didn't help).

Way to test this is to install it and its 1502 card in another system.

Since it's all unhooked, anyway- and you're ready to donate it-- why
not find another computer, that doesn't have that 'suspicious' Kodak
software on it- and see if it works allright there. [BTW, my nephew
has been looking.....<g>]

'Uninstall' programs, from everything I've heard are very unreliable--
the Kodak install might have 'upgraded ' a file & now Scanwiz can't
use it.

That is no excuse for Microtek not being able or willing to answer
your questions, however. I think it's a shame that what is really a
pretty good product is going to fall by the wayside because they don't
want to invest in support.

As I mentioned, I've invested many hours into trying to make the E6 work. It
was nice when in did. I did install it on another PC with a rather basic
WIN95 configuration. Got exactly the same results.

I uninstalled the Kodak Software and everything according to the Microtek
instructions, which means the TWAIN* directories and programs, MSCAN*, and I
removed anything related to ScanWizard from WIN.INI.

In the end, though, the real problem is the poor (missing) tech support, as
you mentioned. I really hate to pass this problem on to anyone else. It
might not be a favor.

Thanks for the response.

I have probably re-installed ScanWizard a dozen times. Each time I delete
everything with TWAIN in the name, including the TWAIN folder in Windows, and
the other componants that the ScanWizard instructions suggests. If there is
some offending item, I'd like to know how to find it.

Tried it in another system. Same result. I can't try the color correction
suggestion because I've removed the scanner and feel I've wasted too much
time on it already. I think it comes down to the tech support issues. What
if I get it to work awhile, then something else goes awry?

Thanks for your response.
