Recently purchased a Nikon LS-2000 scanner from Ebay and have setup to
connect to my laptop running XP via an Adaptec 1460B SlimSCSI card.

Have installed ASPI layers, drivers etc and the PC & software can see
the scanner without any issue.

The problem is when I go to actually scan. Using Nikon Scan v3 I get the
following msg: 'scanner has reported a hardware error. Present function
cannot be continued. Sense: 0X04110100'

On other software (Silverfast & Vuescan) the prescan fails completely.

Could this be a firmware issue. Unable to check if the scanner has the
latest 1.31 version as the update/install software does not support XP
:(

Or, is the error code something else, worse, did I buy a dud?!

If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Thanks,

S.

Does the LED stay flashing after booting up the unit?
If so, it likely is a hardware issue, a common one is that the lead screw
(which drives the the scan head) is stuck.
If this seems to be the case, remove power from the unit and remove covers
to gain access to the front of the unit and locate the small stepping motor
which drives it. You will notice that you can manually rotate the motor
with a small 'flat-head' screwdriver, be gentle as it may be jammed all the
way to the end of travel.
Monitor what is going on and you'll work out which direction to turn it.
If you found it was stuck keep rotating in the free direction for at least
twenty turns, you should notice the scan head moving, though very slowly.
Leave covers off (dont have it connected to PC) and power it up, look at
what happens wrt motor etc.
A clean and re-lube of the lead scew and guide shaft will be needed if all
this was the case.
Fixed mine up that way.
Hope to have helped.
Mark

Thanks Mark,

Appreciate the suggestion. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be any
issue when the scanner is switched on. The led flashes for roughly
10seconds before becoming static, and it makes all the same startup
noises experienced with other scanners.

Waiting to hear back from Nikon, I've submitted screen grabs of the
error msgs and also a system summary... I await their reply eagerly.

No probs mate, I hope Nikon helps you out. It'd be nice to have the info on
what all the error msgs mean too.
Good luck,
Mark.

Nikon's reply....

As your LS-2000 scanner has been discontinued and uses third party
hardware/software (SCSI adapters, ASPI layer), in some cases there are
issues that Nikon cannot provide troubleshooting steps and a working
solution. Your scanner has been tested with a very limited range of
Adapted SCSI cards available at the time of testing, since then Nikon
did not re-tested it with other/newer SCSI adapters.

Also the required scanner firmware and specifically needed Nikon Scan
version are very old and will not be updated, so there is actually not
much options for providing troubleshooting and solution for the possible
problems.

Please see a link below for a checklist for trouble shooting steps:

Answer Title: Using a Nikon SCSI film scanner with Windows 2000 or XP
Answer Link:
https://nikoneurope-en.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1400

Our recommendation to try and follow steps outlined in the above link,
but if it does not work then only option is to contact SCSI card
manufacturer to check if they would be able to offer any support on
that.

We also do not have any information regarding the meaning of the error
code 'Sense: 0X04110100'. I am very sorry that I cannot advise you
further and I do hope that the troubleshooting steps in the link above
resolve the issue.

Followed all the steps, but no joy.

I remember having issues with the Adaptec card so, since I had a few
different models/makers to choose from, I swapped until it finally worked.
Definately worth trying any card you can get hold of.

Nikon recommend only using the Adaptec card. I have never used one,
never had problems with the LS2000. I still run my Minolta scanner off
the same SCSI card.

Quite a few motherboards have an onboard SCSI port have you tried one of
these?

Natternoise,

I have an identical situation. Apparently the LS-2000 I have was
working just before I bought it. From Nikon Scan V3 I get the hardware
error message you mentioned; from Vuescan I get asked to make sure film
is in scanner, which it is, but that's as far as I get.

I'm going to crack it open and check the little motor and generally poke
around to see if some damage might have occurred in shipping.

Any progress since your last posts?

Was the screw in when it was shipped? I think they have sensors which
need a clean also try another method of loading the film or slide and
see if its not a particular holder its causing the problem.
