Vuescan, Minolta Scan Speed, calibrate every time?

Hi,

I have a Minolta Scan Speed connected via an Adaptec 2910 to a Windows
98 PC.
Scans using the Minolta Twain driver work fine.

When using Vuescan, every time I do a Preview the prog. pops ups a
little window headed 'Calibrate' and says 'Please remove the film holder
<OK><Cancel>'.
If I remove the holder and click OK then the scanner whirs for a bit,
calibrating presumably, and eventually a blank white-ish 'image' appears
in the preview window.
If I click Cancel, then the preview goes ahead normally.

I don't quite undestand what is happening here. Is the 'Calibrate'
window just offering me the option to calibrate every time? If so, the
wording of it is confusing*. Why does it not go on to tell me to put the
film holder back, when calibration is over, and complete the requested
preview?

Can I not do a calibration and then save the results, only
re-calibrating when I feel that it might be necessary?

The Scan operation (click 'Scan' button) behaves just the same as above.

The actual scan results seem fine, but I am just a little confused about
this user interface issue.
All advice gratefully received.

Thanks, John

* I would expect something like 'Calibrate? <Yes><No>', then going on
to say 'remove the holder' and calibrate etc. if I said Yes. Also, this
function should be able to be turned off if I didn't want the calibrate
choice to pop-up every time.

I never had this problem with my Scan Speed (which I used in combination
with a Mac). However, since recently, with my new DSE 5400, VueScan
wants to calibrate my scanner each time I start up the application
(fortunately, not before every preview or scan)- despite the fact that
the calibration file is already present in the VueScan folder.
Like you, I can ignore the request for calibration and VueScan will work
fine, but I think it's a bug.

What version of VueScan are you using? I think the last version I used
with my Scan Speed was 7.6.70 or 71.

Normally, yes. VueScan automaticaly saves a calibration file, in your
case something like dss.cal, or something like that.

Hi Wilfred,

I have Vuescan 7.6.72, the latest I believe.

This issue looks like a bug then, as I am never getting a .cal file
saved at all.
Hopefully Ed will see this and be able to sort it out.

Thanks for your quick repsonse.

Regards, John

I think I was wrong about the extension. I think your calibration file
should be named 'vuescan.dss'. I'm sorry but I'm somewhere else so I
can't check.

Same experience as Mick McCarron: no pop-up window, suggesting calibration.
I use a Scan Speed on W98, and have to calibrate only once. If I want to, I
can calibrate again, using the Device/Calibrate menu.
The calibration file is saved in the Vuescan directory.

Thanks everyone for your advice. It's sorted out now, although quite how
this happened is confusing.
I deleted Vuescan, re-downloaded it and re-installed, just in case
anything had got messed up somewhere along the line. This didn't make
any difference. The problem still persisted.

I then poked around a bit and found 'Vuescan.dss' in the Windows
directory. So, a calibartion file had been written but Vuescan couldn't
find it later, I deduced. Vuescan.ini was also in the Windows directory.
I moved these files to the Vuescan directory and now everything works
fine.

Just to investigate a bit more I deleted the .ini and .dss files and
restarted Vuescan. I then did a calibration. This time the .dss file was
written to the Vuescan directory, as was the .ini file on closedown.

So, everything seems to be ok now. Quite why the .dss and .ini files
went into the Windows directory before I don't know. Actually, I didn't
think to mention it before, but I did at one point find a Vuescan.ini
file in my C drive root as well. Strange!

Still, it's all fine now, so I'll just get on with some scanning. ;-)

Regards, John

Ok, here's the definitive word (I think)

When I installed Vuescan I set up a shortcut for it.
In the shortcut properties I neglected to fill in the entry 'Start in'.
This seems to cause the following problems:
- Vuescan does not write it's calibration file anywhere, which results
in it wanting to calibrate before every preview and scan.
- Vuescan writes it's .ini file in the root directory.

Once I filled in the 'Start in' entry (as the Vuescan directory) things
work fine.
