I also noticed artefacts using Vuescan 7.3.8 when the IR clean option
is switched on.

I could an verify an earlier observation posted by Dmitry Rozmanov
(di...@xenon.spb.ru):

I am using an Acer ScanWitt 2740S and with this scanner, too the
actual dust spot is up and to the right while the cleaning visible as
a lighter area in the final scan takes place down and to the left.
That Vuescan does not "hit" the actual dust spots in the same place
became obvious when looking at the raw scan in Photoshop while the
alpha channel was switched on. The dust particles in the alpha channel
show the same displacement as the cleaning artefacts in Vuescan.

Since the alpha channel and the actual photo are slightly displaced
cleaning is less effective compared to the software supplied with the
scanner and really creates artefacts.

You are right Peter!
I'm currently evaluating Vuescan 7.3.2 using the Scanwit 2740S and
Fuji Sensia 100 slide film. I'm experiencing currently exactly the
same problem. Scans done with Mirafoto look a way cleaner than those
done with Vuescan.

I've heard Canon Canoscan FS 4000US had the same problem, but I haven't
tested it myself.. I thought it was only Canoscan FS 4000 US's problem,
but I guess not. I hope Ed looks into this as soon as the holiday is
over. ^^

I have a Canoscan 4000 and the FARE does an excellent job at dust removal with
FilmGet. I also have VueScan. The colors etc are much better with VueScan
IMO, but the dust removal is not as good.
