Recently when I tried to use the HP PrecisionScan Pro software with my HP
5370C scanner and its transparency adapter, I found out the adapter would
activate but the Photographic negative setting was grayed out. On calling
HP, they told me it was a hardware problem and the only solution was a
scanner repair. That, of course, is not feasible since the repair would be
at least two thirds the price of the scanner. And without the negative
setting the scans I want to do of large negatives can't be done.

Since I also have Hamrick Software's VueScan 7, which I have used with my HP
PhotoSmart scanner, I decided to try it with the 5370C scanner and
transparency adapter. Surprise. It seems to do good scans with mode set to
transparency, media type as color negative, bits per pixel set to 48 and
resolution at 1200 and color balance set to auto. I should note that
VueScan identifies the scanner as a 5300 instead of a 5370.

My question: If it is a hardware problem causing the photographic negative
setting not to be available to the HP scanning software, how does the
Hamrick software produce decent scans with the same scanner?
