I searched on Google for information regarding a fix for constant
paper jams on my LaserJet 1100A printer. There were references to
http://fixyourownprinter.com, as well as some complaints about HP's
handling of the problem.

It seems, for whatever reason - possibly Usenet traffic - that HP has
owned up to this problem, and in a pretty reasonable way. The reports
of the kit at the web site above indicate that the kit works, and
costs on the order of $23, but you can buy the separator pad from HP
for about $6. I opted to try for the HP version, and was pleasantly
surprised to see that they are now shipping a "kit" to fix the problem
- and it is free!

I was dismayed that the delivery date was listed as two weeks hence,
but again pleasantly surprised when it arrived 3 days later via US
Mail. Might have helped that I'm in NC and it was apparently shipped
from TN, but still, 3 days is a darn sight better than two weeks.

I installed the kit, which has very clear instructions. (I can only
evaluate the English, alas, but it is in 18 languages!) I have printed
a 10-page document with no problem whatsoever. This is not exactly a
complete test, but since this problem had grown so bad that the
printer could no longer grab a single sheet of paper AT ALL, I
consider this to be an EXCELLENT start.

Here's the document regarding installation:
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/support_doc/bpl10122.html
It contains a link to the actual order page, which I'm copying here as
well:
http://195.92.115.180/hp_request_product.asp

FYI, this problem is apparently known for several models. The "T"
toolkit that I ordered applies to the 1100 and 1100A. The "L" toolkit
is for the 6L, 3100, and 3150.

Hope this helps someone trying to deal with this very annoying
problem!

Yeap, this is a headache for HP 1100 series. The plain fact of loading
paper the way it does just asks for problems sooner or later. The overall
design is loosely used through many of HP printers but the 1100 series
just shows it sooner. The kit has always been available but nice to know
they offer it for "free" or low cost and directly to end-user in some form.
just my 2-cents....

Below is another person's opinion. It's strictly a bandaid repair
that can cause more problems. I've heard of the pads coming
loose and attaching themselves to the fuser assembly.

They're available for free on the HP website. I have tried them on
several of our HP LJ 1100 and 5L's ... no luck at all. We've had to have
a technician replace the separation pads in all cases to get satisfactory
results.

They have probably responded to dealer and customer feedback because
many 1100's show the problem under warranty. The bandaid fix may work
but it would be better to disassemble the printer and replace the sep
pad, sub pads, and pickup roller at the same time. They may be
included in the $23 kit. If you decide to try the free kit, take the
sep pad out, clean it with alcohol and make sure that suckers
attached. They have been known to end up in the fuser, which is a thin
film, and trash it.
