I currently have two pcs connected to a hub. I understand I can
connect the printer to one pc, and make it available via printer
sharing across the network.
This would require the pc thats connected to the printer to be on all
the time if I wanted to print from the second pc. Is there a solution
which avoids having the pc on all the time? My printer (canon s600)
is not a "network" printer. Are there devices that will make it one ?
Is a printer switch my only option to get what I want - it'd be nice
to take advantage of the lan since I have it in place.
thanks in advance..
Ed

It depends on if the S600 is a host-based printer or not. If it's not,
you could use a print server such as the HP JetDirect series. These are
small, standalone boxes you hook 1-3 printers up to, and then to the
network.

There are "printer servers" such as Castille LanPRESS and HP DirectJet
which plug into the network and then you plug the printers into the
"printer server". So, if you had several PCs on the network, you only
nead the PC you are working with to be turned on and be able to print
from the network to the "printer server".
I use an HP JetDirect 500x with 3 PCs on a network and two printers.
I have an extra LanPRESS print server (3 parallel printer ports plus 1
serial port) that I would sell, if you are interested.
Go to ebay.com and check out used prices.
For printing, you can get by with a 10base T unit very nicely... one of
the older ones.
