Hello,

Any opinions on the Brother HL 2140 laser printer (the real cheap one on
sale now at Staples for about $ 60.00)

Thanks,
B.

It's GDI, aka a Winprinter. For a single user, or maybe in a home
network with Windows printer sharing, it's probably okay. It won't work
with a standalone network print server.

As usual, you should check local thrift stores for a used business-class
laser before buying a new low-end unit:

I have used a Brother HL 1050 with pleasure for nearly
10 years. It will need any day now a new drum costing $150-200
not to mention toner. So I bought this week a Brother
HL 2040 (which runs under preferred Win98) supplied with
refurbished drum (rated for 12,000 pages and half-load toner
cartridge (rated for 1,000 pp.) The total price of $60 is less than
half what a replacement drum would cost me.

I have had nothing but good luck with consumer grade Brother laser printers.
Drums have never failed on me and toner cartridges are reasonably priced. I
have had a 1040 for about 6 years and it is still going strong.

At $60 you have little to lose. Be aware however that the cartridge that
comes with the printer is a "starter" cartridge and will print only about
1/2 the number of pages a normal cartridge will print. Look for a deal on a
replacement cartridge because you will be needing one sooner than you think.

Best of Luck

I think that you might be better served to look at HP, Okidata, Samsung or Canon.

How can you take the recommendation of someone who runs Win98?

Brother monochrome laser printers are fine. That is one of the reasons they
have such a high market share in monochrome laser faxes, some of which use the
HL 2140 engine.
This is an entry level printer suitable for small home or office environments.
As Warren Block has pointed out it is a GDI printer, this will have no impact
on a single PC installation or a peer to peer networked environment. Cost of
running this printer is similar to the products from other manufacturers that
compete with it. The engine has been available for well over a year and is
reliable.

I think this printer is a steal at $60. Print quality is fine, speed is
fast. I'm using it with a Mac; works perfectly. Only drawback is the
single sheet feeder - it really is only one sheet a time and lacks a
shelf on which to put the sheet.

Its smaller footprint is the reason. My old HL 1050 is 15 inches by
21 inches, but the HL 2040 occupies half the space, barely 13 inches
square (and lacks a tray for the single sheet feeder.)
