My primary need is a b/w copier with a paper feeder. The best machines
I've found are the HP OfficeJet G85 and Xerox WorkCentre XE90fx. I'm
leaning towards the HP because it's a bit faster than the Xerox and has
color output. I don't mind having the extra fax/print capaabilities of
these devices. Any comments on either of these or recommendations for
others I should be looking at?

I just bought a new HP OfficeJet G55, which is apparently the same as the
G85, but without fax, which I don't need. It copies - color or b/w -
beautifully. (I'm no artist or expert on printing, copying, or graphics in
general, but it looks good to me.) It also prints quite well. But, it
doesn't scan at all - yet!

HP's beautiful brochure says that the G55 works with W98, NT and 2000. But,
if you get out your magnifying glass, you can see the little asterisk beside
the 2000. Follow that to the note that says to check the Web. Then, go to
www.officejetsupport.com/win2000/ojg.htm and read that the page was last
updated 4/25/00, and that BETA software for the G series will be available
"July 2000". Then check www.officejetsupport.com/ojg/drivers.htm and see,
"Coming Soon", that "...the driver downloads will be available on this page
August 2000."

I probably will keep the G55 because what it does now looks good, but we'll
see... At least, it's better and faster than the Xerox XK35c which I tried
before - and for which there is not even a projected date for W2K drivers!
