I was considering purchasing one of the high end Epson Stylus Photo printers
but received some material from Canon on their 8500. Has anyone done any
detailed comparisons of the Epson 87x, 12xx vs the Canon printers--the
prints I received from Canon were great. The major reason I'm reconsidering
Canon over Epson is the inkjet cartridges--from what I've read the Epson
cartridges are expensive and have a chip that prevents refilling. I like
the Canon separate color cartridges although I've read a bit on this
newsgroup about problems finding the cartridges?

Any advice.

Thanks,

Tom

I have an Epson 870 and an Epson 2000P and a Canon 8200. The apples to
apples comparison is the 870 to the 8200. As with all things beauty is in
the eye of the beholder but IMHO the Cannon is the better of the two. If
you use the Canon photo paper pro the prints are outstanding (the Epson 870
does a good job too). The ink tanks last and are far less expensive (as low
as $6.50 on some sites) and are refillable (I have read, felt no need to try
as I feel the factory units are inexpensive enough). You don't want any of
these printers to sit around with out running a print once in awhile but I
have had no worse problems with the Canon's cartridges than I have with the
Epson or the HP Photo Printer I just gave away. If you read this NG long
enough you will find somebody having problems with every printer out there.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Hi,

The BJC 8200 is a comparable printer to the Epson 1270 - I would actually give a
slight edge on photos to the Epson (even though I do not "like" Epsons). The
8200 can accept compatible ink tanks and also can be refilled which will cut the
operating costs greatly.

The BJC 8500, although pricy, does outstanding work on photos and all color
graphics. IMO, better than the Epsons and of course better than the 8200. This
printer also accepts compatibles and can be refilled as well.

Do a search of this NG's archives and you should gets lots more info with
comparisons on these printers.

Cheers & Happy Printing,
Al

Already done.
http://www.silverace.com/dottyspotty/
Epson 870 review, and Epson 870 & Canon 8200 print sample comparisons.

In short, the Epson 870/1270 printers are still #1 in the world in absolute
photo print quality of any <$500 inkjet photo printer avail. today, but due
to the orange-fading problem of prints (www.p-o-v-image.com/epson/), I'd
pickup the second best photo inkjet printer myself, the Canon 8200/8500
printers. Three other Japanese computer magazine reviews that tested the
HP/Canon/Epson photo inkjet printers earlier all picked the Epson as their
#1 and the Canon 8200 (same technology & print quality as 8500) as their #2
picks above all other brands and models for a photo inkjet printer.

The difference is minor, like comparing 100 vs. 200 speed film prints. (The
older Epson 750/1200 printers do about 400 speed film prints as comparison.)

www.shopper.com for lots of places that carry the cartridges.
Canon is far better for cost - individually replaceable colors; Epson =
throw away all 5 colors when 1-of-5 runs out! with no way to refill and
Epson either. You can refill Canon's all day.

If nothing else, if you can get someone to print this for you, it'll show
how amazing they'll both look:
ftp://ftp.photodisc.com/pub/ -> free test targets, www.aladdinsys.com for
decompressor.
