I have a NEC SilentWriter model 90, and it supports both HP PCL 4.5 (HP
IIP Printer emulation) and PostScript Level 1.
Which will give better quality?
I noticed that for text, things look about the same, but for graphics,
PCL emulation prints way faster than Postscript. Also, I'm not sure how
to set the half-tone values, so I left it on default, and if I print a
photo in PostScript mode, it prints ugly, large dot patterns.. In PCL,
at least I can select error diffusion, and it gives a nicer output.
Any comments?

It sounds like you've answered your own question.
Different manufacturers provide different balances of support for PCL
versus PostScript. For Apple printers, PostScript is much better.
For HP printers, PCL is much better. You try both PDLs and pick the
one you like.
You might want to keep the PostScript driver installed for special
situations. For example, the "fit to one page" command in Microsoft
Project works only for PostScript.
