Hi.
I currently have a Lexmark Z51. It's been fine, but I've had bad luck
with refills/compatible cartridges so am looking for a cheap all
rounder, with photo use (scans from 5x7 prints, to 5x7 or 8x6 mostly,
and occasional low rest digital photos (max 1Mpixel)), and reduced
running costs. But most printing will be web pages etc.

Firstly I can buy a Z53 with colour & BW cartridges for only a few %
more than just the cartridges. (aroun 64 UKP against 55 UKP)

Or I could try the Canon S300 (around 80 UKP) or HP3420c (around 80
UKP) - but not sure if these are 6 colour.

But the best deal would seem to be the Epson 790 at around 75 UKP or
the 810 at around 87 UKP. The running costs on the epson appear to be
the cheapest. Both of these have 5+1 colour printing.

What is the difference between the 810/790. What I see so far is:
* 790 is a 2001 model, 810 is brand new
* 810 is around 25% faster
* 810 has colour matching (PIN)
* 790 cartridges are cheaper (originals 10/15 against 20/18)

My gut feel is the 790 is the better deal. Comments?

Finally I would consider printers with seperate ink tanks, but what's
the best option with minimal reduced refill cost. I probably use one
set of cartridges every 6 months or so.

I'm also confused - the Epson Stylus 790 is a US model designation - it's
the 890 in the UK.

The cheapest photo printer Epson does is the 810 and it can be recommended -
good print quality, but the printer itself is quite noisy and there is no
roll paper support. If you can find an 890 close to the price of the 810,
it's better built and has roll paper support, then go for that.

How many photo's would you get out of a cartidge though? Would the Epson
950 (separate ink tanks) be a false economy due to having to pay £330
compared to £160?

Shane.

790 is the UK model, the 780 is the US model or may be you are confusing
the 795 (in the US) which the the 895 over here.

I would say always for with the current model!!! £11 pounds is not that
much more besides make sure that the 790 is not a refurbished printer
but rather a BRAND SPANKING NEW one.

The 790 uses the same carts as the 890 but the 810 uses completely
different ones - who know why.

Mmmm - well there is no 790 model listed on the Epson UK site and neither is
it listed on Jessops or Dabs.com. I do recall this printer and my hunch is
that it was replaced by the 810.

* What's the draft text quality like on the 810? (Z51 has
draft/std/high - I use std for text letters , but occasionally draft
for web pages). The Z51 draft BLACK is quite readable, although colour
is very very pale.
* What about B&W speed for letters?
* Paper jams? Noise?

I need to print
* Web Pages
* Letters
* Business cards/invitations
* Greeting Cards
* Photos (mostly scanned from 5x7 prints at the mo) - 6 x 4 up to A4
size

in about equal proportions

Would you regard the 810 as being "up" to this? (As I do want to print
some A4 photos I think the 810 is a better option over the C80)

I've now had 3 replacement Z51 (15M0120) carts, and ALL have shown
different forms of banding - has ANYONE had a replacement that has
been "pure" ie pure bands of colour on test sheets.

If I give up and move to the 810 Can I expect the Epson to be fairly
pure? How likely am I to start getting banding? How "fatal" might it
be? How long should the head last? Will it gradually degrade? How will
it affect photos?

How well does the ink last for BLACK? Does a lot get wasted every few
days when it purges for cleaning? More wasteful than a Lexmark I
guess? And for normal non-photo printing do the colours get used
fairly evenly? Are they the same size as the c60 etc per chamber, but
with 2 extra for the photo colours?

I know the 810 uses info-chips. Is refilling easy assuming a
chip-resetter is at hand? Are the bulk inks much cheaper? Can I expect
the colours to be TRUE for photographs? Other preferred UK stockists
(I know inkylink has been very helpful here - thanks. But others?).
Any inks to watch out for that make head clogging more likely?

If you refill and an ink chamber dries out - even if it is noticed
straight away is it Bye Bye 810? Or is it ok?

How does the Epson fair on regular inkjet paper. I thought the Z51 was
good. I've read elsewhere that epsons are awful, and also that the 810
is fantastic. Who to believe! How about on greeting card stock /
business cards (ie Avery)

Many thanks for any kind words of advice. Much appreciated.

Thanks
NIGEL.

You could be pleasantly surprised at the Photo quality of the C80 and for
text and economy the single pigmented cartridges are hard to beat.
