Yea, to use a parallel printer on the Mac you have to get a
cable/software combo called Power Print. I use Power Print so that I can
print to my Canon printer from my Power Mac.

Right... and...?
The Mac printer and modem ports are _identical_. They're both LocalTalk
ports and the Epson should be able to use either one for its serial
connection.
Possibly the printer port is configured for use by something else. I ran
into something similar recently, but I don't remember how I cleared the
problem. I think it involved a large bottle of acetone and a shotgun.
