Hi, does anyone know what error code "13.1 paper jam" with LaserJet 4000N
means? I have a machine that prints this error code almost immediately after
power up.
Is "13.1" supposed to tell that in which part of printer the jam is? I have
disassembled the fusing assembly and i'm quite shure that the paper delivery
assembly is also clear.

Thanks in advance, Ville Jorma

I don't have any experience with that particular model, but some earlier
ones have given me trouble when the small plastic piece that comes in
contact with the paper somehow comes off its mounting. Check these little
paper fingers in both the infeed and outfeed areas. Make sure they are
pivoting correctly, etc.

If you new enough to pull apart the fuser assembly, then I guess you
knew enough to pull out the toner and check under there, also the rear
feed tray. Finally, my greatest troubles with this error came when
someone tried to run a low-grade transparency sheet through the printer
which literally melted the sheet around the return assembly roller. Make
sure all the rollers are free and clear. Also try a different toner
cartridge, the metal latch that makes a circuit to inform the system it
is in place might be bent.

That's a paper delay jam at paper feed area. It's
possible that you have a worn out separatation/feed
roller. Does the printer have a print job going when
it gets this jam? There is also a 13.10 jam that is
a jam in the duplexer. Do you have one of those
installed?

I don't have the 4000 manual with me but I believe (from memory) that
the "1" in 13.1 indicates a fault at the "first" place a jam type of
fault can be detected. This is in the front of the paper path after the
leading edge of the paper has left the paper tray but before it gets to
the registration assembly. I've had a few problems with jams in the
paper input area, and unless you're experienced with the 4000 series,
you'll need a service manual to dis-assemble the printer to check for
the jam. When a jam occurs in this area, most people pull from the
front of the printer to remove the jammed paper. Sometimes, a small
piece of paper will get wedged in the feed assembly. The next print
attempt will cause another jam, ...etc. I can't remember if you can see
the sensor from the front of the printer with the paper tray removed.

Of course there could be a defective or broken sensor, but my guess is a
small piece of paper in the front of the paper feed area.
