I bought an Epson photo 820 on Dec. 20, 2001 for a gift,
from Staples (an office supplies chain store).

I picked up the $50 rebate coupon from the store
at the time of purchase and sent it in. Everything
was in order and it was done within the time limit.

Result: Got back a postcard saying the "serial number
is not included in the rebate".

This is fraud. Staples will get no more of my business.
There is Office Depot and Office Max in my town, which
I will go to instead.

On top of that, the color printheads have clogged.
This printer cannot be left sitting for a month between
printing color photos. Using the self-clean feature
several times still leaves streaks in the test page.

I doubt Staples intentionally intended to defraud you. Whats typical of
rebates is the specifc conditions that they require you meet in order to
process the rebate. By law, Staples must permit you the opportunity to
correct the missing or incorrect information rather than flatly denying the
rebate. Iomega tried that one a few years back and were ordered to pay
dearly!! Call them and try to remedy the problem. If not, call Staples
corporate office and raise a stink. If all else fails, you might want to
mention that you're going to file a complaint with the Federal Trade
Commission.

Regaridng rhe clogging printheads, welcome to Epson printers!!!! Its a
fiartly typical problem and many people fight to keep theirs clean. The key
to Epson printers is 1) use it daily (color and black), 2) use Epson print
cartridges or good quality aftermarkets (there's some junk out there), 3)
never use refill kits, 4) when powering off the printer use the power
switch on the unit (do not turn it off via power strip.

If yours is badly clogged you should be able to free it up by doing a bunch
of cleaning cycles. Try printing a bit on heavy stock paper (not cardboard,
but heavier than copier paper). Your unit is too new to be really badly
clogged. If all else fails, call Epson and have them either send you a
warranty replacement or have them flush the heads.

I suspect Epson will eventually follow Canon and HP (only a couple of their
newest mdoels) and use user replaceable printheads.

Good luck

I bought an Epson C80 from Staples in February. I believe that the
rebate is being offered directly by Epson. I have seen the same rebate
being offered at Future Shop as well as Staples. The rebate form that
was given to me had an address for Epson.

2 Weeks ago I also purchased a Epson 820 , which also came with a
rebate form which I sent to a different Epson address.

The information on the rebate form specified that I include the sales
receipt, the serial number, and the original UPC code cut from the
side of the box. I believe that these requests are fair in order to
prevent fraudulent calims from being submitted.

Staples is not directly involved with the rebate. In fact that is why
I had to pay both the Provincial sales tax and the Goods and Services
Tax on the original purchase price of the printer.

I know it is annoying to have to wait again for the rebate, but at
least you still have the opportunity to resubmit it.

I had purchased the Epson 820 from Staples and the(ir) rebate form said
to send the form to STAPLES; even the Epson website said that for rebates
from Staples, to send the request to Staples and not to Epson.

Forgot what I filled in regarding the form but I did receive my rebate
in 5 weeks; I was quite surprised and the experience made me feel that
Staples honored their rebates very quickly, like Nikon (took 6 weeks but
the postmark was postmarked at the 4 1/2 week point).

I had the same thing happen at best buy when I followed the
instructions exactly on some memory I bought. By the time they send
you back a postcard saying you forgot the "serial number" or the "UPC
code" they figure most people have thrown out the packaging and
they're probably right. What a sham!

If you didn't send in the serial number how is that fraud? It is stated on
the form. If you did send it in, then I would complain.

I sent in the serial number. Given my personality, I double
and triple checked it. It was correct.

That may be the case in your country. Here in the U.S., the
rebate form had Staple's name and address on it. The card
that they sent back, also was from them. They may be acting
as an intermediary for Epson, without telling me, but
it appears that they are running the "rebate" program.

I will try giving it the Windex treatment this weekend. Thanks
to this newsgroup for tips and links on how to do this.

The form that Staples gave to me was ripped from a pad that was laying
on the shelf. It did not have a serial number on it.

Epson asks for 3 items to be submitted:
- ORIGINAL receipt ( not photocopy)
- UPC code removed from the box
- serial number

I suppose that they would only require the first 2 items to ensure
that a second person did not claim a rebate for a printer that had
already been claimed. I expect that the serial number is not needed to
prevent a second rebate but is probably used when warranty work is
claimed.

Who knows, maybe it is kept in a database that the police have access
to , so that stolen items can be returned.

If I recall the serial number was already included on the UPC label
anyway.

A quick search on Ebay and pricewatch found a mess of ~$5 cartridges
for Epson 820 I am sure they would clog. I heard some of the pros
like Mr Inkjet make good third party cartridges that will bring you
down below 3 cents a page for black ink. Epson only charges 19.95 for
the all color cartridge so why bother looking elsewhere for color ink?

360 * 6 * 8 * 2

Where is everyone buying this Epson ink that plugs up their printer. We
have owned Epson printers for at least 6 years and never had any of them
plug up. They are by far the best for photographs. You are probably buying
ink from the flakes that are selling toner kits...They'll sell anything to
make a buck. Wendy
