I just tried the new HP 970 and now have the Epson 900. On quality
mode there is no difference. I printed several different pages on both
printers and handed them out to see if anyone could tell which printer
printed which. No one could tell.
The Epson on photo mode, as in tons of ink and taking forever, is
better than the HP.
Draft or econo modes, it depends on setting in Epson printer driver.
The Epson printer driver is very tweakable.
I do newsletter printing and need reliable duplex capability. With the
Epson I can manually duplex and since the paper path is straight it
seems to be more reliable.
We'll see in the next 30 days. I'm wathcing for printhead clogs. If
it has a problem I may go back to the HP970.
But as far as quality of print goes, there is no real world difference.

Before you buy.
An unfair comparison, and an oxymoron.

Neither. It's Grolsch ;-)

Hmmm, nice, could be a new word ...
No, it's a just a dutch beer brand, much better than Heineken. And
since Heineken is much better than Bud or Milller ....
Besides, how would 'What the grolsch is going on' sound to you? Not
half as powerful as 'what the fuck ..'
See ya,

I use my printer a lot for printing detailed computer generated maps (USGS
topo levels of detail) and am interested in which printer would be faster
and produce more detailed maps. Until now I have felt that the Epson
printers had the edge in quality because they were capable of printing true
addressable 720x720 resolution which is important for printing fine colored
lines like contours on a map. The HP 970 seems like it may change that since
it appears to offer higher addressable resolution.
Just to make sure I got your post correctly:
In high quality mode HP 970 Quality = Epson 900 Quality
In best mode on glossy paper HP970 Quality < Epson 900 Quality
Some further questions:
1) What were the setting used in each printer driver for these tests?
2) In each of these tests what were the speeds of each printer?
3) Have you compared the speed and quality of these printers when printing
out business graphics type images (ie Line Art, embedded text, solid color
fills)?
