I'm trying to repair a HP deskjet 970cxi that puts a crease at the top of
every sheet of paper about three inches across the width of the page. I have
found that it is caused by the paper leaving the paper tray and hitting the
end of the seperator pad assembly (as opposed to just gliding over the top).
It then bends enough to be deflected over the top of the pad but as a
result, ends up with a large crease.

Have tried cleaning rollers and pad with alcohol.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Nigel.

Are the 3 Kicker feet in good shape or are they broken ?

The so called kicker feet are three pieces of plastic (about 1/2 inch
long ) that lift the paper as it comes out of the printer in order to
clear the path for the sheet that follows.
If the "feet" are broken, the paper comes out of alignment and the
following sheet collides with the previous one, resulting on the first
sheet being ejected out of the printer (if you are lucky) or causing a
paper jam at the output of the printer with usually, disastrous
results.
The cost of replacing that flimsy piece of plastic is close to $300.00
US dollars.
I am trying to fixe the problem . If I succeed I will post the
procedure.

I will not buy another HP printer that uses such arrangement or
requires so much labor to replace a little and vulnerable piece of
plastic.

Replace the part yourself. You need part C6429-40031 available from
http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main?sel_flg=modinfo&HP_model=C6429A

At least you can get the paper pusher bar for the 970, the only
option with the 990 is to return it to HP for a replacement unit.
It's annoying as the part's value is only 75c and it takes less than
half an hour to replace. For some annoying reason HP no longer place
a parts list for the DJ range on their web site. I suppose one could
drill the plastic and insert some tooth picks to do the job, I
thought of a bit of threadded brass rod but wood would be less liable
to damage the machine.

I should have waited for Bob Headrick's answer but I needed the
kitchen table for my dinner .
I made an inverted U with long legs ( one a bit longer than the other
and glue them to the bar using "crazy glue" . It looks solid but now
that I know that the part is available , I am going to order it .
It's working ok so far.
Thanks Bob

Oh Bob, I do wish that your employer had followed through with the
parts for the DJ-990, I have one here, scrapped with less than 1000
pages because of misstiming. The only option at the time was to send
it back for a replacement but my client waited until warranty had run
out. It's so easy to replace, a child could do it once the cover is
off, yet the machine is scrapp because of this simple "paper pusher
bar" worth only 70c.:-(
