Most any printer can print two-sided if you take the finished print
job and put it back in the feed tray upside-down. Most printer drivers
have an option for printing "odd pages only" or "even pages only." The
only difficulty with this is that for some makes and models it can
cause problems with toner coming off when the sheet is fed through a
second time. Also many printers tend to jam a lot when you try to feed
the sheet through again.
The HP 4050 can use an optional duplex unit. This device is about 3cm
tall and a little wider and longer than the print path. It slips into
the back of the machine. When installed it becomes an internal
catch-bin. As each sheet is printed it is shunted into the duplexer
unit. Then the sheet is fed from the duplexer unit back over the drum
and fuser to print the other side. From there it is sent to the output
tray. When you install the duplexer unit you have to go into the
driver options and tell it the printer now has a duplexer. When you
do, applications will show "duplex" as an option in the print dialog
box. You click on it and the driver will tell the printer to use the
duplexer. Don't click on it and the printed sheets will bypass the
duplexer.
As far as I know, there are no laser printers currently available that
have two drum/fuser assemblies to print both sides in one pass. It
would be a big beast, as it would require two toner cartridges, one
for each side. You can print both sides of a sheet in one pass on a
printing press, but not on a laser.
Don't reply to the e-mail address in the header. It's bogus. But
I read the newsgroup every day so post here.
