After nearly a week's worth of printing on my recently purchased HP
Deskjet 970Cse, I thought I might post some comments for those who are
interested. I upgraded to the 970 from a 712c, which I owned for
about a year.

I'm VERY impressed with the 970Cse! I do a ton of photo printing and
the 970 is noticeably better than the previous generation of HP
printers. Using the PhotoRET setting, a page of photos print about
twice as fast as they did on my 712c. Using the 2400x1200, the output
is very fine but takes longer to print. So I use both modes,
depending on what type of pictures I print and whom they are printed
for.

I really like the 2-sided printing module. It's not perfect (have had
a few jams), but it's very nice for certain projects. While using the
2-sided mode can actually take longer (since you have to wait for the
ink to dry), it's more convenient because the printer does it
automatically and you can leave the room.

The printer is VERY fast in draft mode! Normal mode is still faster
than my 712c on draft mode. Best mode is pretty slow when you are
printing graphics or photos, but all printers in this range are slow
for those projects.

I cannot comment on how the printed photos look compared to Epson,
Canon, or other brand printers. But I can say that I am very pleased
with the results. With the 712c, my friends/family could tell that my
photos were printed on my printer if they looked fairly close (they
could see the dots). But on the 970Cse, they have to look VERY close
to tell at all. And in 2400x1200 mode, even closer. At normal
viewing distance, these printed photos look every bit as good as those
from standard 35mm. (I'm using a Nikon Coolpix 950 digital camera, by
the way).

When deciding what printer to buy, I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend
the extra $$$ to buy the 970. I was initially going to buy the 932 or
the 952, but I decided I wanted the extra speed, the 2-sided printing
module, and I liked the trays better on the 970 (seemed more solid).
I print a large volume of pictures for myself and my family, so I'm
glad I bought the 970.

I've only tried HP papers so far with this printer. With my older
712c, I tried Epson, Kodak, and HP with mixed results. Darker colors
on the Epson paper looked muddy. The Kodak paper was nice, but I
liked the HP paper because of the feel and gloss texture. On the new
printer, I decided to buy a package of HP Premium PLUS photo paper to
see if there was any difference between that and the regular stuff...
and there wasn't (except the thickness, of course). Since the regular
photo paper was plenty thick for me, I can't justify the extra expense
of the PLUS paper. To be honest, I like the HP Professional Brochure
& Flyer paper because it is glossy on both sides and still thick
enough for photos. It comes in a package of 50 and I can use it for
my two-sided projects (greeting cards, etc) too.

I'm going to try refilling my ink cartridges for the first time too!
If it doesn't work out, oh well, but I hope to save some money by
doing it.

The only problems I have experienced so far with this printer is an
occasional paper jam with the 2-sided module and some kind of
incompatability with the Creatacard 4 program. But other than that, I
am quite pleased.

Take care,
Travis

I've been very happy with my HP 970CSE... until last weekend. For the
first time, I tried to print on continuous (banner) paper. I tried
printing with a couple different programs and in every single case, it
would print one 11" length, then try to skip to the 'next page'.
Since it didn't find the end of the paper, the printer halted with an
'error' light.

Has anyone successfully printed a banner on the 970CSE? I'm using the
USB port (I couldn't print full-page color photos on the LPT port, so
I had to get a USB port. Bought a new computer with plenty of ram,
and STILL get errors when trying to print a full page of color photos
(*sigh*).

Hi:
I recently bought a 970Cxi. As I see for your experience
you are doing great!!!
My concern now is about how to calibrate "the system" and
get the famous "Wysywig"!!! For your information I am using
Photoshop 5.5.
I couldn't find any ICC for this printer...
I kindly request you to share how you set your system:
- RGB Set Up (Photoshop)
- CMYK Set Up (Photoshop)
- Monitor Setting Gamma (Gamma in Control Panel)
- Etc...

Thanks for your help.
Claudio
