Questions
===========
- Doesn't HP or Lexmark make a flatbed laser printer/copier?
- Is Xerox more reliable than Brother? (Are both brands considered
"junk"?)
- Any opinions on the models listed below?
- Any OTHER model recommendations?
Here are the models I've found so far. I'm leaning toward the Brother
DCP-1200 because of the warranty.
Brother
========
MFC-9600 (fax) - $650 - 1 year warranty
DCP-1200 (no fax) - $500 - 3 year warranty
Xerox WorkCentre
=================
XE90fx (fax) $600 - 1 year warranty
XD105f (no fax) $600 - 3 year warranty
Thanks for any comments!

Before you buy.
- How many copies before these need a "major service"?
I've read on this NG that, after XXX number of copies, you have to enter
a top-secret code to get some Xerox printers to start working again.

- I've read that similiar Brother printers (MFC-9600) are VERY slow for
copying. Are Xerox any faster?
Thanks for posting any opinions!
You're on the ball...don't venture into the color mfc's. You have to go
laser, and Brother has excelled in that field.
I have a mfc-6550 (6 in 1) for over 3 years now and it still works without
a problem. I used it throughout law school and have only had to buy 3
tonor cartridges...all coming to less than $90 for the 3! The cost per
page can't be beat (I don't have actual numbers, but you can check from pc
mag reviews). The drum unit hasn't been replaced yet (about $130 on the
internet), so this has been a great investment.
I've recommended other recent brother models to other future
attorneys...and not one complaint.
If I'd buy a new one today, I'd go with the mfc-9600 because of the faxing
feature. Besides that, either model is wonderful (dcp-1200 doesn't have
faxing). The only reason I'd buy a new one is because of the flatbed
scanner and auto document feature (mine has the sheet feeder...so I can't
scan/copy bound volumes).
The MFC-9600 is the ultimate office machine. Don't pass it up. It used to
sell for $999 when it came out back in December.
Go to your local Staples, OfficeDepot, or OfficeMax and test one out. Feed
it a stack of papers, and see the output! 12 pages per minute!!!! Color
Scanner! Ahhh.

I'd certainly recommend it.
P.S. we have had a Brother Fax for several years, we have not had to
repair it ever, just replace the toner and drum. We receive about 300-400
sheets a day and about the same sends (Confirmations). We have not
replace this fax with the MFC-9600, the MFC-9600 it will only be used for
light duty faxing.
