The Apple iPad forum mentions about 18 Hewlett Packard printers
available for use with the iPad's AirPrint system. All but a couple
laser printers are "all-in-one" printers/copiers/scanners.

I see that the info provided was from an HP employee! Are there any
iPad compatible printers from other companies like Epson or Canon? I'd
like something less complicated than the HP multifunction printers,
preferably portable.

Google for AirPrint and ePrint.
Whether other printer mfgr's besides a few HP's become available is
anyone's guess.

Lon-

I've Googled. This time I found more definitive information, that HP is
still the ONLY company with AirPrint capability.

Someone at a local Apple store told me he heard that Epson had one.
Googling, I found that Epson has a competitive new system that is NOT
AirPrint compatible. So much for universality.

I'm thinking that Apple has an iPad printing fiasco, but no one besides
me seems to care!

As I implied, it remains to be seen if enough vendors will add the
proprietary Apple support to their printers. Apple tends to be much
like an obnoxious 2 year old--different merely for the sake of being
different as opposed to being different for a good reason. No idea why
they didn't go with BlueTooth or one of the new wireless technologies,
but then I haven't been in their dev labs [vendor/partner, not employee]
for almost a decade.
