laser printer drum within toner cartridge?

Hi,

I have a Brother HL1440 laser printer. I shipped it cross country and it got
a big banged up. Now every page I print has a small little blot pattern, it
repeats 3 times going down the page.

Obviously my main laser-drum thing got nicked up or something. I'm
wondering, is it located within the toner cartridge? Then I could just get a
new toner and it would be fixed...

Probably the drum itself unfortunately.
If you remove the drum unit and then take the toner cartridge out of the drum
unit you can see the drum, it can be rotated using the gear at the end, you
will probably see the mark on the drum. If that is the case there is no harm in
trying to clean it since otherwise replacement will be needed.

I'm not sure if the hl-1440 is the same as their other models, but Brother
can be a bit nuts with consumable pricing.

I have a Brother MFC-7840W, and I was able to buy a HL-2140 on sale that
uses the same drum/toners as the 7840, for $59.00 new (not refurbished)
The same store wants $120.00 for the drum, and $69.00 for the toner while I
know the toner in new units is only half full, it was still cheaper to buy
the printer, and throw it away, just to get the consumables.

Point being, it may be cheaper to get a newer printer than fixing the old
one
(at least on their lower end stuff)

But as another poster says,.... try cleaning it first.
