I finally got the info I needed from lexmark tech support. Here's the
useful bit of information:

"To get a page count you will need to put the printer into diagnostics
mode. To do this turn the printer off and power it on holding down
the READY and RETURN buttons. Once you are in the menus hit more
untill you see PAGE COUNTS and then PAGE COUNT.
You will have to order a manual it is no longer on the website due to
the age of the printer. The number to parts is 1-800-553-9727 and the
part number to the USERS GUIDE is 1408818"
I've ordered the user guide and service manual.
