Now that I've successfully unclogged the black ink reservoir and have my
printing working again (from a previous post), the time will come when I
need to refill these Canon S400 cartridges. I tried refilling one a week
ago following the instructions in the refill kit. They said to use a pen
and push the plastic plug into the cartridge reservoir. However, I pressed
as hard as I could, but couldn't force the plug into the chamber. I finally
ended up using a hot needle to make a small hole so the refill tip would
fit. However, as fast as I refilled the cartridge, the ink dripped right
back out of the opposite side. What in the world is going on here and what
is the proper way to refill these BCI-3eBK( or C, M, Y) cartridges?

Thanks,
JJ

You must block the outlet on the other side. Tape will work if you
are careful. I use the original cap that comes with it when it was
new, held on with a rubber band. And the hole you filled it with must
be sealed. Use either a small screw -- I use 2-56 stainless steel,
or hot glue it.

Wayne,

Thanks for the information! I didn't realize there was a certain technique
to refilling these. The refill instructions I have mention nothing about
it. BTW, what do you use for cleaning out the printer head itself, which
has been the source of my problems lately. I read soaking the head in
Windex, which I did and it seemed to work (except now I have to set printing
to maximum dark to get the black to print out without breaking up- maybe the
detergent in Windex is partially clogging the head(?) ), but is there
something less sudsy that would also do the job?

Thanks,
JJ

Try non sudsing ammonia, Available at the grocery store in the
cleaning department. Ammonia in the Windex is what does the job
anyway.

After the soaking I usually blow as hard as I can on the print head to
force anything left back out the inlet.

Wayne,

Thanks again. If you read my post from today, I think the problem may have
been caused by dried detergent. I'm going to try resoaking the head with
the non-sudsy ammonia, although it is workable right now as long as I keep
the black set at the most darkest setting and the print speed slower. Kind
of a pain though if all I want is a draft at a fast speed. So, I'll give
that ammonia a try.

Regards,
JJ
