Anyone have one?

Any comments?

It's been strange reading the reviews. The 'professional' reviews have been
like mid-7's, but in all cases so far the actual user posts have indicated
the score is much, much too low and that the printer performs much better
than the review makes you think...

I've fed up with Epsons and clogged heads. Done. Kaput. No more.

I have had one for 2 months now and can find no complaints. I does a great
job on photos, graphics and type.

Just can't get much better for the money!

I do have one problem... it prints sooo fast that 3rd party inks cannot dry
fast enough to prevent smearing. I guess I will just have to spent the $12
+ for Canon inks. At least for the black, I haven't had to replace any
colors yet.

I also have a Canon 7000 (6 color), Epson 880 (4 color), and Lexmark Z24 and
there is no comparison. The i850 is head and shoulders above those
printers.

I was in Office Depot yesterday and noticed they had the BCI-3 color inks
two for $19.95. That saves $4 on 2 cartridges.

Have you compared the I850's photos to the newer Canon printers (S820 or
S900?) I'm trying to decide between the I850 and the S820. How does the
I850 do on smooth gradients like skintones or sky?

I bought one, (i850) two days ago.
I had a Lexmark 3200 that was going bad. I miss the audio that came
with the lexmark. It would tell me if no paper fed, or if the ink was
going low.

The Canon i 850 is much newer than the S800, S820 and S900. i850 is
the best photo output I have seen from a four color inkjet. But even
with it's 2pl. drop and 4800x1200 resolutionthe i850 has a lower
quality picture than the S820 and S900. This is due to the two extra
colors......wait until the S900 replacement comes out.......4800x1200
resolution, 2 pl. drop size and six colors!!!!!

Any idea when the S900 replacement will be announced?

Is it already out in Japan?

The replacement is the PIXUS 950i. Here is the URL and part of the text:

Canon Announces New Lineup of PIXUS-series 'Bubble Jet' Products

Tokyo, Japan, Oct. 02, 2002 - (JCN Newswire)

PIXUS 950i and 850i
The new PIXUS 950i is the flagship model of Canon's PIXUS-series Bubble
Jet printer lineup, realizing outstanding 4,800 x 1,200 dot-per-inch
(dpi) image resolution and high-speed performance.

Equipped with a 3,072-nozzle high-density printhead, with 512 nozzles
for each of the six ink colors-cyan, magenta, yellow, black, photo cyan
and photo magenta-the new PIXUS 950i couples exceeding photo-quality
image resolution with a class-leading*1 print speed of approximately
one page per minute (ppm) when creating A4-sized photo prints. Canon's
proprietary New "MicroFine Droplet Technology" further contributes to
superlative imaging performance, operating in all print modes to ensure
the precise delivery of microscopic two-picoliter ink droplets that are
consistent in shape, size and density.

The new PIXUS 850i, featuring Canon's Advanced Precision Color
Distribution Technology and enhanced sheet-feed and recovery systems,
realizes class-leading*2 output performance of 22 ppm in monochrome and
14 ppm in color in addition to ultra-high 4,800 x 1,200 dpi image
resolution.

Here's the Babelfish of the decription:

Nothing that I could see about downloads.

If it prints CD's well, it's worth every bit of $490US.

An article in a Japanese computer mag lists the street price as $325.

Someone asked about the 20# paper use with the i850 under another
subject/thread and I also would like to know whether use of the "normal"
heavier photo paper is "ok"...??

I use photo paper that is .00625 inches thick in my i850 with no problem. I
just leave the lever in the left hand position and get beautiful prints. I
guess that would be somewhere around 65# paper.
