Yes, they are.

It's suprising, actually, if you look at the number of refurbished epson
printers for sale. Many people claim that epsons are JUST as reliable as
other machines, but I dont think so. You can walk into almost ANY retail
store and see hundreds of refurbed epsons in inventory. The only place you
find refurbed Canons, HPs, or Lexmark's is at computer shows or manufacturer
direct.

This tells me that epson does a *LOT* of repair work and/or has a HIGH
return rate.

Yes. Do they?

What model number and what price were these? What does their latest
advertisement claim these are? I didn't notice any Epsons in Sunday's
ad. This might just be a localized special.

The "SUBJECT" header that you used is quite misleading, no? Where do
they claim these are new?

Or that the refurbished or returned Canons, HPs, or Lexmarks are being
packaged as new.

Or that Epson sells a heck of a lot of printers.

Or both.

I used to buy Canon printers by the dozen that were boxed as refurbished,
but they were absolutely brand new inside and out. I was told by my supplier
that when they discontinued a certain model and started pushing the "new and
improved" model, they would box the remaining new stock in refurb boxes and
sell them off through different distributors than they could sell the "new"
printers. It makes sense in the quick-to-discontinue world of inkjet
printers that a manufacturer could make a lot of enemies of their authorized
dealers and distributors if they are suddenly selling off to wholesalers for
$50 the same printer they shipped to authorized dealers a week ago for $100.
All they need to do is call them refurb and they prevent a major problem.

I scrapped my Epson Color Stylus 800 for a NEW HP 900 series about six
months ago. Got REALLY tired of Epson's print heads, cleaning cycles, etc.,
etc. Sure they print nice images . . . . WHEN THEY PRINT CORRECTLY!!!

I was in Staples yesterday, buying paper, and because I'm looking to
buy a new color printer, I walked down their color printer aisle. I
saw a few Epson models on display, and some inventory boxes beneath
them. Every inventory box was clearly marked "REFURBISHED." Sounds
fishy to me. To the best of my knowledge, they don't mentioned that
the units are refurbished in any of their advertising. Are the
supposed to?

Epson like many OEM's will sell refurbed items to many stores. NO, the
seller can't sell them as "new", but don't confuse that with "like new" as
many do advertise it as. If Staples sells it as "new" then you have a
legal point, but I'm no lawyer. One reason that the item is going to
cheaper to be sold a greatly reduced price is because, it's refurbished.
There clear as mud... You may want to visdit Staples website and see how
its advertised there??? hope this helps

good luck -----Willy

I just bought one of those refurbished Epson 900 printers. It was just put
on display and had to be price scanned for me.It cost me $99.95 and is a
great bargain. You get new ink cartridges still in the silver wrappers and
the printer can't be told from new.It works perfect. You get the same
warranty but you don't get the included software bundle, just the driver cd
which also has the status monitor driver on it.All in all, you just can't
beat it.The store that I went to,didn't advertise them as new.

Epson does the same thing as Cannon, as new models are getting ready to hit
the stores they burn off excess inventory by marking new product as refurb.
It keeps their distribution chain happy and moves the inventory quickly.

I was told at a Black and Decker out-let store that refurbished can be from
over stock, repacked product due to the box being damaged, returns that are
checked over and repaired if needed, but very seldem damaged product. The
damage products are ussally throw out due to cost of the repair over price
of product.
