Problem with default printer, troubleshooting help needed.

I have a printing problem, that seems strange to me.

After installing a new network printer (HP4100), users having it as their
default windows printer can't select which tray to print to. It all comes
out on the default tray. Everybody who has one of the old printers as their
default printer, can print to any tray on the new printer without any
trouble at all. My temporary solution was to give the affected users another
default printer, but I would rather solve the problem than to work around
it.

Why does it matter at all to the printing whether the printer used is set as
the default or not?
I really need some hints, because it doesn't make any sense to me.

(It is a windows NT 4 network by the way)
