HP printer nomenclature .....Laserjet ??

I'm shopping for an HP black/white printer.

I see that HP makes several models that they call "LaserJet"...

Is an HP Laserjet printer an inkjet printer, or is it a Laser printer?

HP "LaserJet" printers are indeed laser.

HP inkjet printers have several names, including Officejet, Photosmart,
Deskjet, etc.

The confusion is understandable... The HP Laserjet printers have no
"jets" so the nomenclature doesn't make any sense, other than that they
also made "Inkjet" printers and the earlier wide carriage low res
versions were called "Paintjet" printers.

Anyway, to answer the question the OP had, HP Laserjet printers are what
others call laser printers. There are no "jets" within a laser printer,
it seems to just be a way of trademarking their technology using similar
naming that they used for other printer technologies.

I think you'll find his attitude isn't typical here. I think you'll
also find he doesn't post much of interest either. I think he posted
about 5 times in the last two years.

More the other way around. LaserJets came before their inkjets, dating
back to 1990 or even earlier. I think 'jet' was meant to imply 'fast'. It
was thus natural to keep 'jet' when they starting making inkjets!

Way earlier. I worked on the HP LaserJet 500 back in around 1984,
early '85. Most of my repairs were on the Apple LaserWriter, based on
the same Canon CX engine.

Actually, that's not correct.

The original HP Laserjet released in 1984, the same year the HP Thinkjet
(black and white) thermal inkjet printer was released.

Thinkjet came from TH(ermal)INKJET.

I don't know which hit the market first. The Paintjet was there first
color inkjet and it was released in 1989.
