I bought an Alps MD1300 recently and like its print quality.
The only problem I see is that there are bands across photographs.
These bands are very noticeable with a dark background.

Does anyone know if it is the problem of my printer or it is typical for all
Alps printers.

Any help is very much appreciated.

I've had to go through 3 printers until I was satisfied. I choose the md 2300
only because it was much cheaper than the replacement which is the 1300. the
printers are awesome, they only need to work on their quality control during the
manufacturing process. Keep exchanging until you hit the jackpot, trust me,
you'll be happy when you do.

Get it replaced...I had to return 2 before I got one that worked to my
satisfaction. When you get a ""good one", they are great!

You say "worked to your satisfaction." My satisfaction is no banding at all.
I'm on my second one now, and I still don't like it. Will I find an MD-1300
that doesn't band, or is it hopeless?

From what I have seen of Alps printers, that is a pretty common problem
with photos. You can just try cleaning it a lot I guess.

I saw the Alps 1000 for the first time today at CompUSA. I have two
sample print outs that look great! Many colors and lots of detail.

Now, I'm sure that the in store printer is working at it's best so what
experience has anyone had after buying? I would be interested in
printing mostly graphic pages I've designed and perhaps a few photos. I
also have a lot of other questions:

1. Are there ribbons or cartridges for the colors? Watching it print
it seemed to go over the paper four times - 4 color printing? So does
one need only four colors or really need many colors? I visited their
web page but if there is a lot of information there I missed it <g>.

2. How long do the cartridges/ribbons last?

3. How does it work in text - black and white?

4. How long has it been on the market? I've never seen it before nor
seen it advertized.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

There is a thread in rec.photo.digital which "Melvin W. Gann"

It turns out he really means setting the PC BIOS's printer port
setting to ECP.

I bought one last week as well. I have read previous posts that suggested
supporting 8 1/2 X 11 prints rather than letting them hang down freely. I
have supported all my prints, and have printed perfect photos from 4 X 6 to
8.5 X 11 with no banding.

The photo realistic mode, however, is another story. There are definite
bands visable spaced at approximately 1/2 inch. Using the overcoat hides
these fairly well. I 've decided to retire my old reliable BJ610 and keep the
Alps. I use a laser printer for B&W work, so the limited print speed is no
problem for me.

In article <6kkt9r$t...@sjx-ixn8.ix.netcom.com>,
Joyce,
I have owned the 1000 for about a month now and I am very happy. The price
with the $50 rebate is great, and the output is great. I am using it as a
second printer with a laser as prime. I have a HP 660CSE and did not use it
often enough to stop the ink from drying out . About every other month I spent
$60 just to keep it in ink. With the Apls, that is not a problem. You use four
cassetts, red, blue, yellow, and black for standard printing. and a dry film
overcoat for true 1200x600 pix. You will get about 80 8.5X11 prints/set but
great quality. Keep ind mind you only need to replace used colors not all as
in jets, also all four cost $28.00. For straight text you can use a double
black cart or use black in all four slots. Hope this helps,
Ken
