What inkjet would people recommend for printing crisp, sharp rich black
text on plain paper? (i.e. as close to laser quality as possible). I
want an inkjet because I do mix colour graphics in with the text, (and
colour lasers are too expensive) but photo quality is entirely
unimportant to me (only clarity of graphs, etc.). For reference, I have
an Epson stylus 440 which I am fairly satisfied with in terms of
quality, but the jets always clog up randomly--it'll be fine after I
clean it, but will clog up again not too long after. I also have an HP
842C which I am not satisfied with in terms of text quality on plain
paper (too much bleeding). The Canon BJC-2000 I have also has
unsatisfactory text quality on plain paper. Basically, I'm looking for
something as good as or better than the Epson 440, minus the clogging
problems. Any suggestions?

My Canon S750 blows away every HP printer I've seen for text and graphics.

Hi,

I would agree the higher Canon S series do very well. (like 720,
820,900). ANother to consider is the Lexmark Z-52 or 53 printers which
should be really cheap now. They do excellent text and graphic color
work on plain paper - some of the best on plain inkjet paper. The black
is a pigmented, "waterfast" ink.

Drawback is the cartridges are quite expensive but you can refill them
and that will save considerably.

Cheers & Happy Printing,
Al

Surprises me about the HP842C as my 930C gives excellent black text, a
million times better than an Epson 400 I had. Although it isn't too fussy
about what cheap plain paper used, it does pay dividends to try a few, as
some can give laser quality and price is no guide to the quality of the
results. Lexmark have always been the very best though at black text, but
the worst at everything else.

HP has always been the leader when it comes to black text on plain paper.
Canon has always been bad. The best and cheapest choice you could make would
be the HP Deskjet 3420. It's an amazing printer for the price. Trust me on
this one - if you try it, you'll love it.

Just the opposite is true here, all 3 of my HP deskjets look very bad compared
to the Canon S750 for text and graphics - no comparison in quality or speed.

Yeah Canon is much better than HP for Text 7 graphics. I think EarlyAdopter
works for HP. Which is why he always slags Canon even though they make all
of HPs Laser Printer Engines.

The LJ-2200 is all HP own work and is fairly good, the LJ-1100 is an earlier
sample of HP's work and is a total disaster. There are several other models
made by HP, the 5,000 series is one notable disaster. While most of the
Canon based models are excellent the printer that attracts most derieion is
the LJ-5L and 6L but only because people are too lasey to replace the
seperator pad kit a very easy job.

You may also consider Epson C80. While I am not impressed with the colour
printing, the text on plain paper looks fine. I have had this printer for
over half a year and use it very little, but even then there seems to be no
problem with clogging. Just recently I went away for more than four weeks
and the printer worked fine after my return - not a single nozzle was
plugged. But then, I might have been just lucky ...
