I have an HP Laserjet 4 that has begun to print too lightly. I have
changed the cartridge but it hasn't helped. I also have a HP Laserjet
4plus, so I put one of the cartridges that was in the 4 into the 4plus
and it prints a lot darker, it looks good. Can anyone tell me what I
should do to get the 4 working properly?
There was a similar post here from 1/18/08, but the thread ended
up being more about lighter print with streaks across it, whereas the
pages I'm getting have no streaks. It seems to be uniformly light with
almost a slight grey tint to the entire page. Also, boxes that should be
completely black are very light grey and look like waves going through
them.
I could really use some help, as the 4plus printer has problems
of it's own and may not be of service to me much longer. Any help would
be much appreciated!

Thanks.

The scanner lens may be dirty, you would need tgo remove the top cover, open
the scanner shutter and clean the lens with a soft cloth or Q tip, it can be
done with the cover on if you open the shutter but it's hard to see what you
are doing. If that doesn't fix the problem then it's probably a high voltage
issue. One easy thing to do is to swap the Transfer Charge Roller between the 4
and the 4plus and see if that helps. Remove the toner cartridges, the transfer
roller is the sponge roller underneath, your printer should have a little hook
inside the top cover, use that to lift the left end of the steel shaft that the
roller is on and slide the roller out. Check that the electrical contact at the
end of the roller is making good contact with the roller shaft. Do not touch
the sponge with your fingers, oil buildup on the sponge can cause print quality
issues.
You can download the manual from
http://www.feedroller.com/Store/hp_manuals.php, chapter 4 describes the
procedure. The manual also describes possible causes for light print.
