Hi: My trusted Canon has developed a nasty problem with the YELLOW cart ink
level. Regardless of the actual ink level (from empty to 100%), the status
monitor shows a steady 30%. There must be some way to fix this problem. Any
ideas.

Do you use compatible carts?

These should be optical sensors. They can be fooled if the sensor or the
tank itself is dirty. Also dirty contacts on the head carriage.

Yes to both. I have tried every combination possible. I always get a 30%
full reading.

John - The Canon ink monitors, prior to the chipped cart printers, are not
like the relatively accurate gas guage in your car. There is a little prism
molded into the bottom of the reservoir, and when it is exposed due to the
reservoir being empty you get the "low ink" message. The printer then does
an estimated count down for a few pages and then gives you the "empty"
message. Canon assumes you will then replace the empty or low cart with a
new OEM full cart. It then indicates that that cart is full. If your
aftermarket carts don't have the prism you won't get the low or empty
signal. Then, when you replace the cart with a new or refilled one it will
still register the usual 30% or so full. This system, except for when the
prism is exposed, is totally inaccurate at best. I try to refill my carts
before the reservoir is empty so I never get a low or empty signal, and I
never get the ink monitor to reset to show what it thinks is a full cart.
