Hi. I'm a travelling PC service man. Need a light weight printer for
printing small but fancy invoices quickly and reliably from roll feed paper
that is no wider than 6" (15cm). Don't need color. Will connect the printer
to my laptop, and 120vac power will always be available.

Won't rule out ink-jet, but I question its reliability and economy of use. I
imagine that it will be either a dot-matrix printer or thermal design. I've
seen a 24-pin Panasonic model, but it was 17" (43cm) x 12" (30cm) x 6"
(15cm) height and weighed 11 lbs. It was too big and heavy for portability.

Anyone have any make and model recommendations for me?

I found this one at two webstores; US$60 and US$74:

SiPix Pocket Thermal Printer; 400 dpi; black; uses (4) AA batteries; weight
14 oz with batteries and roll paper; both serial and USB connections; paper
width 4 1/8" (105mm); roll paper length 8'2" (2.5m); sheet paper length 5
3/4" (148mm); printable width 3 3/4" (95mm); speed 2 ppm; 5.85" (15cm) x
4.25" (11cm) x .992" (2.5cm)

I think it may be an inventory clearance item. I don't think it's currently
manufactured. Obtaining paper for it could be a problem.

Then there's a number of sales receipt printers (thermal), but I haven't
found any for paper wider than 3" (7.6cm). The ones I've seen are made by
Extech, Zebra, and Printek.

I don't have a printer recommendation for you but if the printer you
mention is the A6 model then $60 is too much. Compgeeks has them for
$30 http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=PPA6-BLK . Compgeeks
may look gaudy but I had good experiences with them and can recommend
them. The printer is discontinued by Sipix but you can order the
paper from their ebay store http://www.stores.ebay.com/sipixstore .

you want. You can have it for thepostage of the printer - it just needs 2
