The two printers that stand out are the HP 1220c or Epson 1290 Photo
I want to print Photos and ordinary graphics and wonder if anyone could
suggest which is the best
I would be grateful for any comments
I would recommend the HP - No clogging of printer heads in months to come!

The HP DJ-1220c is a great printer, it has a very robust mechanism and
should give a long service life. It can print to 13"x19" and sizes
inbetween. If a slightly grainey appearance would suit you then it's the
machine to go for, if you want the finer tonal graduation you can get with a
photo epson then go for the 1290.
The advantage with the HP range of printers is that if your nozzles get
blocked and you cannot get them cleard - steeping in water - you simply
install a new cartridge. If the Epson nozzles get blocked and you cannot get
them cleared with all the methods suggested by various members of this
newsgroup, then your only option is to replace the printhead or the whole
printer.

Blame Microsoft for the spelling mistakes,
it's their spell checker on OE.
I too came to exactly the same conclusion about 2 months ago. Reading
many messages from the relevant newsgroups, I decided to go with the
HP 1220C because of its superior textual speed and quality, and
because I was concerned about the print-clogging issues that seem to
plague many Epson printers, especially if they're not used constantly.
Apart from two gripes with the HP, I'm very pleased indeed with it.
The two complaints I have is that bi-directional capability is not
available under Windows 2000 (nor under Windows XP), so I lose the
capability of online information about the amount of remaining ink
(but since my kids dual-boot into Windows 98 which does have bidi
support, this is not a problem for me). And the documentation is
woeful (the bidi issue was documented, but in an impossibly obscure
place). The paper feed tray is also slightly unusual, in that the
paper waiting to be fed does not lie flat - this probably helps reduce
print jams, but may tend to distort the paper if left long enough (for
which I have no evidence, just a gut feel).
The printer is extremely quiet when printing, even a full A3
photograph (1200 x 600) with RET turned off. In fact, having become
accustomed to the shuddering vibrations and noise that accompany any
printing operation by the HP 820CXI, I have to go downstairs to check
the printer is working!
And I find the photographic quality absolutely fine for my needs. As
for text, it's wonderful, and very fast (faster than my Lexmark Optra
laser printer).
