Cannon MP780 manual fax

The manual says that I can put the machine in manual mode.
The fax does not answer the phone.
When I do get a FAQ, I am supposed to select "fax" then press the
"black" (not color) button.

This will not make it answer the phone.

What am I missing?

Have you cheked phone cable disconnected from phone &
put in fax; then lead from the output socket to phone;
is call waiting taking call too soon.

I don't have one of these fancy multipurpose things, but I do have a Fax
Machine, a rather elderly one.

When the Fax is set to Manual receive, on picking up the phone and hearing
the Fax Tones, I have to press the "receive" button on the Fax and then hang
up the phone.

If I hold the phone off the hook, the Fax machine will not pick up the call.
Maybe your Multi purpose thingy uses the same technology. The Fax program
on the Computer does not have the same restriction.

I am presuming your machine is switched on, and has gone through any "Warm
Up" procedures.

I think my fax works the same way. Only, the receive button would be
"black" or "color"
The only time I get a fax, I have the caller call me voice before the
fax so I am pretty sure the incoming call is the fax.

Maybe I should try picking up the phone and hear the tone before I
press "black"

I think that might have been what I was doing wrong.

Now another 3 months and I can give it a try. Blood lab reports are
all the faxes I get.
