Hi,

I would like to buy an inkjet-printer (no laser-printer!) that only gets
used every couple of month. Are there any printers that don't clog during an
extended period of time?

TIA,

Felix

Felix......

I have been running a Canon BJC-4300 for about 5 years absolutely trouble-free.

I have also had good luck with Canon Printers.....610........I left it in an
attic one time for 2 months.......I had to clean the heads 5 times, but it
was fine after that and many times of no action..........I have a 3000 that
has never clogged, except sometimes right after I install a cartridge I
refilled, but I think we all expect that.......Mt 8200 has not clogged yet
and prints flawless......a beautiful printer....pictures or vector....I am
still amazed by it's output...

Definitely steer clear of Epson, or any printer where the nozzles are
not part of the cartridge. The HP690 can stand long periods of
inactivity - a couple of months at a time has never posed a problem
here.

I agree with the HP take (God, listening to Jim Rome too much). I have never
had a nozzle clog due to infrequent use. I have heard people complain about
their ink prices but remember that you are getting a new high quality print
head at the same time. That means a lot and keeps the print quality high.

<nod> It's been so in my experience also.

Of course, if you want to be REALLY smart, get one of the 4000 or
2000 series Canons, and put the printhead you use in the case for the
"alternative" printhead when you're not using it.

Still, though, the HPs tend to be the best deal out there.

There's a new replacement for the 612 - a 642? - that uses a black
!OR! a color printhead. This might be the best deal for you, even though a
lot of folks scream about the fact that it won't use the "large" black
cartridge. If you're printing that little, then the small bit of money
savings the smaller cartridge offers will be significant, as opposed to the
price per character.

Our exeperience with Canon types (except BJC 300/ 600 & 800 series
-1992 to 97 which had the print heads fixed permanently in the
printers) has been very good for low incidences of clogging. This is
likely due to the use of a trace of glycol in theirs or the reverse
engineered refill inks. It has a hygroscopic property which takes
moisture from the air to reduce ink drying at the heads.

Thanks for all the suggestions! After being shocked by the enourmous
cardridge prices of inkjet printers I changed my original plan and bought a
lowcost laser printer (Samsung ML-4500). Hopefully that won't cause any
trouble.
