The HP 550c cannot feed paper without my wetting three fingers and
pushing the top sheet under the feed rollers! (Ok, stop snickering at
the
old boy with the old printer.)

I've had it into three sections but have not been able (or bold enough)
to dismantel the feed roller section. (Yeah, a new one would probably
be cheaper than my time, but you know how it is with an inveterate
tinkerer.)

Has anyone ever fixed the feed on an HP 5xx model?

Clean the rollers with a clean and damp cloth with mild soap. Don't over
do it and allow to dry. You can try alcohol, but frequent usage may start
to dry out the rubber. A product commonly called "rubber rejuvenator" is
available at office supplies either in small bottle or spray can, damp the
cloth. Do not allow this liquid to touch plastic, it will attack it. Try
this url for a possible source, commerical or public, I think:

The most common reason for this is that the rubber in the rollers
becomes hardened. If that's the difficulty, get a little
non-silicone brake fluid and carefully wet the rollers with it.
Leave it sit overnight before wiping them off the next morning.
Run a few sheets of paper through to pick up the residue and you
should be back in operation. I've got a couple of HP DJ500s that
are still chugging along every day after being "repaired" in this
manner.

Use just tap water to clean the rubber rollers (3). Open and close the
printer to make rollers to spin. Then use something like a small grater
(there are some for cooking and some in the pharmacies). You can also use a
rasp. Make the rollers to spin and use the grater or rasp to make the rubber
rough. I use it to my printer two times with excellent results.

HP sent me a free roller tuneup kit for my 560c when it developed feed
problems. I believe their web site had a troubleshooting page and an
800 number for the kit. The kit refreshes the rubber rollers by
buffing them a bit.
