OfficeMax to refill ink carts

machines and will soon be offering the service, if they aren't already.
According to the article, you bring your cart into the store and take it
to the refilling station. There it will be checked for functionality and
if it's OK it will be cleaned and refilled on the spot. The cost will
vary according to cartridge, but is expected to be about half what a new
cart would cost.
Of course, only certain cartridge types will be able to be refilled, and
I know nothing about the ink source, quality, or any guarantees. All I
know is what I read in the article. But for those who are uneasy about
refilling on their own, it's worth looking into.

They will probably only refill cartridges that aren't chipped... so any
printer less than 2 years old, and you're S.O.L.

Wow, a company who hasn't installed ink refill machines isn't
disclosing what they are not even selling yet? For all you know they
made a deal with the OEM.. but odds are it's from the same people who
make the typewriter ribbons. It's the business model of the those big
office stores, they tend to buy as much crap as possible from the same
manufacturer or distributor.
Your usual argument is the fact that ink is sold without any
accountability. But here comes OfficeMax, a place that sells printers
and extended warranties. Ink will run you OEM side $60 to $80 typical
speaking, a 2 year extended warranty will run you $50 on your typical
inkjet, perhaps less. By the 3rd refill saving 50% you've saved about
$100 bucks and if your printer expodes as a result, it's totally
covered. And heck, you hope the printer expodes as it will get you
into a newer model which come out every 9 to 12 months or so. And even
if they have to shell out $150 each time a printer explodes... they are
making so many buckets of money from repeat customers shelling out $30
to $50 bucks, not to speak of the other crap they always buy. This is
assuming their product causes the printer to explode. So an extra $25
a year and saving 50%, not a bad deal for your average joe, not a bad
deal at all.
So what you have is refill ink, with accountability, and assurance that
even if the product causes total printer failure, it'll be replaced.

replacement carts is BIG business for both them and the store. But maybe
there are a lot of you refillers out there and they decided, 'if we can't
beat 'em, join 'em."
Are they also going to refill toner cartridges?

Could be... last I heard it was NCR but that info is likely out of
date.
Thier ribbons are Nukote and NCR. They have the Nukote and Rhinotek
brands for ink cartridges. I can't pull a barcode off the officemax
website, so I can't look it up.

Perhaps so, but I highly doubt the printer makers will refuse to sell ink
through them. If nothing else, there are always going to be people (hello,
measekite) who are going to buy the genuine article.
It also wouldn't surprise me at all to see other office stores start to do
something similar.

I wouldn't mind if they did, as long as they do a good job of it.
