When I right-click on that unwanted HP printer desktop icon, my WinXP SP2
system hangs forever.
Why does HP put such total crap locked onto our desktops?
More importantly, how do we remove that obnoxious HP shortcut from our
desktop?

It was sometime ago, so am recalling with low confidence here. HP laptop
with same thing. Removal was within add/remove programs.

I had the same thing when I reinstalled my HP Printer the other day.
First , highlighted it and clicked DELTE ( and nothing happened, ) so I
right clicked it and there was a REMOVE FROM DESKTOP option that worked
perfectly.
I'm no expert , but if you can't successfully bring up the Right Click
option , I might try booting to safe mode ( hitting the F8 ) key during
boot , and then try the right click.
I don't believe trying that will do any harm ( of course, someone will
correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure! )

your cross-posting; normally, this is considered poor behavoior. But
actually, your doing so has brought up an interesting question from me.

The proprietary Windows ME driver for my 940c has pissed me off. It's
tentacles are too deep into the system; it's caused crashes. Worse, I'm
offended by its bad behavior of hanging onto a print job during a reboot
-- I mean, this would be the user's desperate attempt to dump a problem
process, no?

Is this stupid or what? Whose bright idea was it to arrogantly force the
reloading of a system-crashing print job, forcing a non-technical user
into a loop-hell? Why in hell did the product manager approve this
rotten behavoir? You know, I'd have fired the bastard. Wouldn't you?
Now, to question No. 2:
Instead of using a printer driver with the manners of Dick Cheney, how
about if we do an end run around it? How would it be to instead use the
driver built into Windows?
I've noticed so far that these drivers, while much less feature-complex,
also aren't predisposed to sell me ink and load "features" that I need
like a hole in the head; they also seem to be a lot better-behaved.

I'm not sure why posting a Windows XP printer problem to
comp.periphs.printers,microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
is so bad ... but the good news is the answers solved my
problem with the HP bad manners in creating desktop icons.

Hi Jonny,
I rebooted many times after trying many times to right click on the
obnoxious Hewlett Packard printer icon "Share-to-Web Upload Folder".
For some strange reason, I hadn't looked in the Add/Remove Programs control
panel. Mostly I'm afraid to remove programs from there for fear of deleting
something that I need to keep my operating system or printer going.
Your suggsetion gave me the confidence to try. I found it in the Add/Remove
Programs application and that removed it from my desktop!

Hi Tom,
When I right clicked on the obnoxious Hewlett Packard deskcop icon "HP
Share to Web Upload Folder", my Windows XP machine just hung forever and
had to be rebooted every time. I soon learned not to right click on that
obnoxious icon (which I never needed or wanted in the first place).
But, I did find the Add Remove Programs control panel did remove that
obnoxious HP Share to Web Upload Folder.
Now if only I knew how to remove all that tons of crap HP put on my system
when all I really wanted was to print to the printer.
- I never wanted their crappy HP picture viewing software because I am
perfectly happy with IrfanView, Lview, PaintShopPro, etc.
- I never wanted their crappy HP fax printing software because I don't even
have a telephone line hooked to this printer (I have a dedicated fax
machine which I never use because email does it all).
- I never wanted their crappy HP scanning software, preferring to use
IrfanView for scanning which works perfectly well.
Why doesn't HP just let us install the printer driver itself?
The instructions explicitly state to NOT hook up the printer but to install
the software first (presumably to circumvent us installing the Windows XP
printer driver).
I DID try to install just the Windows XP printer driver for this printer
but Windows XP service pack 2 inexplicably does NOT even recognize the HP
OfficeJet d145 all in one printer.
Why wouldn't Windows XP have a default driver for the HP OJd145 printer?

will open the folder and you'll probably find the uninstall
program.
You can probably do a "custom" install and skip the stuff
you don't want.

I bit the bullet with that same laptop sometime later. Used the restore XP
CD for it, which overwrote everything and had a clean slate. I then
commenced to wipe out all the stuff not XP oriented. Basically, if it said
HP, used add/remove programs removal, and voila, it was gone. Then, I added
an HP printer, and driver for it later, and double checked for any obnoxious
stuff like that folder you mentioned in add/remove programs again. It was
there again, and removed it again. Been fine since. Just be sure to not
remove the Cd burning software by HP if you use it.
You might check the HP website for current driver software for your HP PSC
(printer/scanner/copier) for XP. This works, basically, in 2 stages. One
installation is for the printer itself. The latter is for recognition and
usage as a copier and scanner. 2 different software packages.

It isn't! /Excessive/ X posting is bad manners but 2 groups is fine & who

for reminding me to not choose HP printers where other makes match.

Double click the "My Computer" icon, go into "Destop", single-click
the HP shortcut, then use your 'Delete' key.
The way to avoid installing all the useless, buggy crap that usually
comes with printer driver disks these days is use XP's own Add Printer
wizard & tell it to use the whatever.inf file from the install disk,
rather than letting 'Doze run the setup.exe program on the install
disk.
This is usually fairly painless, but you sometimes get one of those
shitty self-expanding drivers that bury the *.inf files inside the
compressed archive file. They can usually be copied to your hard disk,
then extracted out to a new folder with WinRAR, which makes the .inf &
the actual driver files visible to 'Doze.
PS: Are you still using your buggeroff.org email address? If so, tell
me, because it got deleted accidentally the last time I upgraded that
server, but it'll only take a couple of minutes to recreate it for
you, if you tell me what addy to forward your mail to.

An interesting issue. In fact, I have had a few conversations with a
friend about HP drivers. He happens to have been the top data processing
guy for the most populous city in the SF Bay Area. He's had many
problems that he's traced to the drivers for the many HP inkjet printers
that his family has used (and worn out) at home. His complaints center
on two issues: uncivilized HP driver behavior causing system problems,
and paper feed problems.
Mr. Shattuck appears to know better. In his wisdom, he wrote to me:
"The spooler is a Windows XP function, and works exactly as it should.
You sir are an IDIOT! PLONK"
I hereby nominate Steve Shattuck for the CPP Miskeate Shmuck of the
Month Award. Come to think of it, has Miskeate just outed himself?

What happened was that I posted in reply to a thread in a printer
newsgroup. The original poster wasn't aware of netequette and had
cross-posted; thus, my reply went out to two unintended additional
groups. I explained her faux-pas to her, but didn't stop to think that
my reply would take the same routing.

For the record, there are some problems with the window xp spooler and
printers that I've found impossible to correct. I've been on all the xp
usergroups and the online tech support site. For an eye opener on spooler
problems check out the xp - fax and printer NG. Lots of posts on the
spooler issue. I've had responses from the MS MVP's to no avail. So much
for "works exactly as it should." Too long a story for the details.
